Game 23
Posted: Wed Jul 16, 2014 1:28 amMy pop and I are headed to Toronto to see the Blue Jays. This is the 23rd stadium we've visited together.
Caught Minnesota, Kansas City and Texas in 2012. St Louis, Cincinnati,Pittsburg, Cleveland, and Detroit in 2011. Philadelphia, Washington and Baltimore in 2010. New York Yankees and Fenway in 2008. Both Chicagos and Milwaukee in 2007. Grew up going to Angel, Dodger, Giant and Padres games, so we got those covered too.
We'll have 7 left after this, Atlanta, Tampa, Miami, Denver, Phoenix, Seattle and Oakland. My Pop's 77 y.o. he taught me everything I know about baseball.
The old man loved the Yankees when he was a kid. He grew up in Texas and loved DiMaggio. My Grandfather loved baseball too (he started a thing called Teenage baseball in Texas- he had a ball with Honus Wagner, Lloyd and Paul Waner's signature on it). So when the Browns came out to play an exhibition in 1949, my Grandfather took my Dad out of school and they went up to Dallas to see them. My Dad said they were total assh&%es; made my Grandfather mad.
In 1950, the Yankees came out to Texas, my Dad was ecstatic, and my Grandfather took my Dad out of school so they could go see them.
It was amazing, but I'll keep it short and hit the highlights. My Dad went to get DiMaggio's autograph at breakfast and DiMaggio asked him to sit down and have breakfast with him. Later , Phil Rizzuto took my Dad around the dugout and had all the Yankees sign his ball and autograph book, including a young player named Mick Mantle. They were totally cool to my Pop.
On the drive back to Waco, my Dad and Grandfather compared the behavior of the Browns and Yankees. My Grandfather summed it up best, "Winners are nice".
