Best platoon ever? How about you?

I generally don't use platoons because I think HAL gives away too many at bats when there are pitching changes and HAL usually waits until the end of the game to pinch hit. If I do use a platoon, it's usually at DH or 1B, where good candidates who fit well with my park and team are cheap and plentiful.

Usually, a platoon has done well if it gets 70-80 RBI against righties and 40-50 RBI against lefties with a total of 35-40 HRs, .280 BA and .350 OBP. For $5-7 mil, those numbers are tough to beat.

I've only had a handful of players get 100 RBI as a platoon player. Fred Lynn ($9.13 mil), Kal Daniels ($3.98 mil) Ted Kluszewski ($3.93 mil) and Juan Gonzalez ($6.70 mil), were the only players to reach 100 RBI for me as platoon players, until recently.

I recently had a team in one of drfreeze's fun injury prone/5 man rotation theme leagues at $125 mil DH that featured 3 platoon players with 100 RBI each and a 4th player with 91 RBI

in the OF Willie Stargell (.246 38 109) and Juan Gonzalez (.287 41 104) combined for .267 79 213.
At 1B Dick Allen (.282 39 103) and Willie McCovey (.283 38 91) combined for .282 77 194

Usually platoons against lefties don't see such high HR and RBI numbers, but my team saw lefties about 48% of the time, as teams in my division loaded up on cheap lefty SP to offset my heavily lefty lineup.

If the ABs seem a little high for platoons, keep in mind that the team led the league in runs, so lots of extra ABs, and, in the injury prone format, there were lots of injuries, meaning that sometimes players had to fill in for their injured platoon partners.

The link to the team is below:

If the team looks familiar, I posted it previously under the topic "Worst to First", as the team started the season 8-22 but rebounded to win 88 games.

Alas, a long, late season Joe Morgan injury that lasted 4 games into the semis and injuries to Edmonds and Berra gave them a wild card finish and they were eliminated in the semis.

Nonetheless, it was a fun season for a good team.

nice to see someone enjoying the game and taking ending out of the money (credits) philosophically.

thanks for the post.

you ever try Mize and Deron Johnson at first? not sure what caps or parks that would work best in, but I have considered them many times. usually just go w a more balanced lefty.

Oliva/Burns for 5.59 in RF was pretty cool

89 RBI v RH, 35 RBI v LH
102 R
212 H
46 doubles
7 triples
33 HR (OK, almost all Oliva)
approximately .346 OBP

decent arms, BUT 9 errors and bad (x) chance totals

Skowron/Grantham at 1B in a no-power park for 5.43

48 RBI v LH, 58 RBI v RH
130 R
219 H
36 doubles
9 triples
20 HR
approx. .392 OBP

numbers are slightly inflated by maybe 30 extra PA over other regular starters, due to spelling injured players

Without a doubt my favorite and best platoon when there is a higher than average number of starts against lefties in a league was consistent until Strat went and changed Gene Clines. Cesar Geronimo in CF and then move LF (F. ALou) to CF and play Clines in LF. A great combination of great defense with acceptable hitting against righties and acceptable defense and great hitting against lefties: 102 Runs 95 RBI fin Griffith '24 for $3.09 and $0.97. Contributed to a manhandling of lefties in that league. And this team was hit by the normalization bug at the end of season losing 12 of last 22 games.
