Negro Leagues vs MLB
1920 – 1955
120 mil / no DH / 5-10-20
League will be made up of 6 Negro League teams (see below) and 6 MLB teams. All NeL players are eligible and only those MLB players that have a card from 1920 – 1955 are eligible. The card used must be in that range as well.
120 million should be enough to include all the NeL players and limit the MLB teams enough to provide a competitive league. But as always open for discussion.
There are roughly 108 unique NeL players in the ATG set, 72 hitters and 36 pitchers (a few do both). Obviously not quite enough to field the 6 teams mentioned above. So a couple of adds to the set…
1) I researched and added almost all the players that have a card in ATG and played in the Negro Leagues as well. That list includes the following players and eligible cards. All the eligible cards are ‘55 and before EXCEPT Thurman’s and Newcombe’s. Thurman’s ‘57 card is a bit more playable so thought it should be included and Newcombe becomes a top line starter by using his ‘56. Also the ONLY card I left out that has Negro League experience is Connie Johnson. My feeling was whichever team ended up with him might be at a disadvantage due to his S6 rating and 1.48 whip if you had to use him in the rotation. But open to discussion.
1. Willie Mays – 54, 55
2. Hank Aaron - 55
3. Monte Irvin - 54
4. Roy Campanella - ALL
5. Jackie Robinson - ALL
6. Don Newcombe - ALL
7. Jim Gilliam - 53
8. Minnie Minoso - 55
9. Hank Thompson – 54
10. Ernie Banks - 55
11. Bob Thurman - ALL
2) We will need to add reserves/back ups from the MLB cards.
The intent is that all your SP’s, starting lineup, front line bench and top relievers are from the NeL cards. Once we get our managers we can decide the best approach.
The Negro League teams
With a little research I believe we have the top teams represented and a good idea who played where. So I’m assigning 3 players (2 hitters and 1 pitcher) to each club with a group of 4 others to choose from to round out the initial 4 spots on the rosters. There are a few cases where a club is underrepresented, like the Pittsburgh Crawfords and Chicago American Giants, so I placed some top guys with them, that from what I can tell didn’t play there.
After each club has their 4 franchised guys we draft on the boards until all the NeL cards are taken. Draft order for the NeL teams will be determined by the total value of your Franchised players. For those players that have more than one card highest will be used for this purpose. Draft will be straight not snake.

Thanks for the input rburgh. But do you mean the Grays shouldn't be able to play in Greenlee? Everything I can find has Greenlee owning the Crawfords...but if rburgh stands for from the pittsburgh I'll defer to you. I like to be as historically accurate as possible!
I based the stadiums off of the teams wiki pages and Negroleaguebaseball.com.

Oh yes, Greenlee did own the Crawfords. Posey owned the Grays, and in later years they played mainly in Washington D.C. (although still as the Homestead Grays). Posey came by his money very legitimately; his father was an early employee of Andrew Carnegie, and was given a substantial stake in the company for his services. Posey was also a fine basketball player, one of the best of the decade of the 1910's.
Greenlee was a numbers king, bootlegger, and general all-around hoodlum. He would not have permitted the Grays to use Greenlee, now would Posey have asked. I suspect that the Grays' de facto move to D.C. was in part fueled by Posey's dislike of Greenlee.
In the early 30's, the country had very hard times and the old Negro Leagues disbanded. Fueled by his gambling empire. Greeenlee funded a revived league in 1933. Posey, who owned both the Grays and the Detroit Stars, angered Greenlee with his incessant shuffling of the two rosters and Greenlee threw both teams out of the league. Greenlee's Crawfords that year included Oscar Charleston, Judy Johnson, Cool Papa Bell, Josh Gibson, Jimmy Crutchfield, Leroy Matlock, William Bell, and Satchel Paige. The Grays' best player was pitcher-outfielder Ray Brown, who remained loyal to the team because he was Posey's son-in-law.
Greenlee got his comeuppance in 1937. The mayoral election in the fall of 1936 had resulted in the defeat of the incumbent. A big part of the election was apparently a crackdown on the numbers racket, and Greenlee found himself scrambling to stay out of jail. He was unable to afford his stars (shades of Charlie Finley) and most of them went to play for Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo, along with many other stars of the Negro National (eastern) league. The rest went to the Negro American (western) league.
All of this is more or less from John Holway's history of the Negro leagues. It was published in 2001, and already seems dated with the avalanche of research that has come in the intervening years.
