Top-end SP

PostSun May 03, 2015 2:08 pm

I am in a 100M no DH league. My team is in Forbes 54; the other three teams in my league are in righty power parks. I have the expensive Pedro card as my top end starter, but a lot of good ones are on the waiver wire. Maddux, Alexander, Mathewson. Walsh, Tiant. Any suggestions on the best choice?

With Pedro already anchoring the staff and playing in a pitcher-friendly Forbes at 100 million, I'm thinking you are better off not adding another high-end starter. You can add some starters who are very good in such a park/cap situation and use the money in other areas. I'm guessing others share that sentiment since these top guys are apparently still available on waivers.

I've seen some very good years come from pitchers - Gregg,Veale, Higby, the cheaper versions of Coveleski and McDowell, Kaat, Sadecki - whose salaries will leave you plenty of cash for the bullpen and hitters. I'm sure others can chime in here with suggestions. Since it's a no DH league, HAL usually pulls relievers out enough that a heftier bullpen might be in order; it also seems the "super reliever" approach is mitigated in non-DH leagues for that reason.

Good luck!

Thanks. I would probably replace Pedro with someone else, if the other guy was better, or still good and cheaper.
This Ed Seward card looks pretty good, but I doubt if anyone has much experience with him yet. Might be useful to have someone who could pitch 518 innings.

Keep Pedro and don't rule out getting one of those studs. Maddux is great but I've never used him much as he is expensive and because I usually end up investing my 10.5 +mil in Pedro. You have the right idea with Score. Drysdale is good too I suppose. Frankly, most people use the cheaper Sadecki and that's what I think mrharryc was referring to. he is a 6L though and a high ballpark singles gimmick crappy/good guy.

I'd upgrade the offense. Parker in particular. I've wanted that Kiki cuyler card for a while and now that it's here I'm not sure about it. 10 mil can get you a Tris Speaker card.

Team looks good and best of luck!

gotta lose those three switch infielders...none of the parks in your division do them any favors, especially yours...20m tied up there and you won't get much to show for it.

Glad you mentioned Seward; I've got him in a league that began recently and he is getting shelled! Of course, with just a half dozen starts the sample size is obviously too limited to draw any conclusions, but it sure hurts to watch the excitement of the new, gaudy-looking card get hammered!

My nickel goes like this....

Haven't looked at your FA list so this is from the hip.
Pedro is a keeper.
Your catcher platoon is a good money saver.
Your bull pen will get fried (if your going with 1/4 of a starting staff, you'll need two bosses- L/R 4m+)
Utley for Parker. Or Gates Brown/ Shano Collins or Phillips platoon
Browning is a lot of money for a lead-off. Dump him and get a real CF - Willard Brown is the Boss.
Switch out Bush for Lloyd- he's your new lead off. Better yet , get Dahlen, the best SS for the $$$ bar none.
Get Wilson for third and move Delahanty to RF; say goodbye to Cuyler
Make sure your LF is producing RBI's- there are a million of them.
If you're feeling lucky, get Thompson for RF and put Delahanty Lf.... but keep him- he's gold.

i would keep pedro, score and sadecki as they are. i would try to get a kaat type for my 3rd SP. i would also keep mcclure and try to beef up 2 of the others to a suggs/sutter or suggs/wilhelm type pairing.

offense wise i would keep parker (clutch, perfect down order hitter), delahanty, and cuyler for sure. i would be flexible with everyone else you have.

here is cuyler 21 games in http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/1402253

best of luck.
