R.I.P. Yogi Berra

Wow - another of the great legends and genuine good guy, from The Hill, in St. Louis.

Yogi was one of those rare great players that everyone liked, whether they were a fan of the Yankees or not. As a kid growing up in the 60s and 70s I think my perception of Yogi was largely the result of the stories Joe Garagiola spun as a color commentator on the Saturday game of the week broadcasts for NBC.

I was never a Yankee fan growing up but I couldn't help but like Yogi .To me, he was the Ringo Starr of the Yankees - the likable one.

My most vivid memories of Yogi (albeit by virtue of recordings - not live viewing) are:

Jumping into Don Larsen's arms after catching Larsen's perfect game.

Reaching from behind home plate to try and tag Jackie Robinson's steal of home in the WS against the Dodgers.

Watching Bill Mazersoski's home run sail over his head and over the left field wall in the final inning of the 1960 World Series game 7.

Agree with your three vivid memories, all of which I watched live in TV. Berra lived next door to my brother-in-law and sister-in-law in Montclair, N.J. I met him once and was really impressed. He was a damn nice guy,

Sorry to hear of his passing. Yogi's life, his values, work ethic, and the way he played the game echo a time we shall never see again in this country. But he will live on in our memories. I used him frequently in ATG III and IV but not in several years now. I'll have to build a lefty leaning power team and use him again. Maybe SOM could commemorate Yogi's passing with another card. Perhaps 1954?
