None of us saw Ruth play, so there's a tendency to view him only in terms of his Strato card numbers, which, of course, are fabulous. We all know that Ruth was a great athlete by virtue of his success as a pitcher and hitter. The article below gives us a glimpse of the type of competitor Ruth was.

My father passed away in 1998 and he did see Ruth play in St. Louis against the Browns many times in the 20s and 30s. He often said that the Babe was as fierce a competitor that there ever was in baseball. And remmember during this time period there was always a ballgame at Sportsman's Park during the summer because the Cardinals also played there. So he saw all of the great players of the 20s and 30s (American and National League) and still said Ruth was as much a "gamer" as any of them. This article proves it. Thanks for posting. Great stuff!
