I have no idea if this guy has any merit in his claim that the previous stories don’t have merit. Any thoughts?

well, two things really.

first, when i went in to google his name, it autofilled "charles leerhsen trump...". i keep my politics to myself on here, but anything trump i associate with lying.

He co-wrote a book with Trump in 1991 and has been an editor and author for years. I doubt that disqualifies him to write a book about Cobb.

I read Charles Leerhsen's very well-documented book on Cobb, and agree with him and somewhat with the Times wrote in their review; he did show evidence to the contrary narrative about Cobb that emerged wrongfully on many accounts to Al Stump's portrayal that led to the "Cobb" move, and which has been discredited on many fronts. (Yet that Hollywood portrayal of Cobb lives long in our shallow pop culture.) I don't care about the instructor in the course or his views; it might go too far in some aspects, I don't know and haven't checked. Clearly, Cobb was a fighter and tough-minded and not often nice, but we tend to simplify and demonize people too quickly in our day and age, without considering the history and context of their times. Not to condone anything in that regard, but a broader view of a man like Cobb is always appreciated.

I've never believed that Cobb was anything more than a very tough competitor and fighter, with an ego that bristled at any criticism. But in all the books I've read, I've seen no compelling evidence that he was a racist. I probably won't read Leerhsen's book because I trust the NYT's review that he writes in less than a compelling fashion and often belabors his point. I just don't have the patience anymore to read anything that is not well-written.

I read this book and found it the most believable of the Cobb biographies ( and not too poorly written). I think most people were more racist in those times ( and I am certainly NOT saying people aren`t racist today)

That has nothing to do with politics. Trump was a habitual liar long before he ever thought about becoming running for office. The OP is just pointing out a fact about the man.

How is pointing out a fact that someone lying is political?

There are FACTS and there are flat out LIES.
