I don't know how common this is, but I had never come close before. Going into the last 3 games last night, only Sammy Sosa was under .500, 3 total bases behind. He would have one start vs a lefty in the last game, having to go something like 2-4 with a HR. OK, then who else could screw it up? Colavito would have one start vs Clemens and anything worse than 0-3, Allen one start vs Pfeifer and anything worse than 0-4, and finally Jeter with 0-1. Well, I looked at the last game first, and Sammy started with 2 outs in his first 2 ab, HR in his third, walk in his fourth and a glorious HR in his last ab and since Allen had a double in 5 ab the last worry was Colavito (my all time favorite player!).Jeter was not an issue since I made sure he would not play. I made Tubby Scales the back up at ss for Arky and removed the request for defensive replacements for both of them. I removed jeter from pinch running, and selected a non starter vs R as pinch hitter vs right and non starter vs left as PH vs left.Since HAL has pinch hit only 5 times in 159 games this last move seemed like an unnecessary precaution, but I was leaving "nothing to Chance". Other than Colavito, nothing could go wrong! Well, Colavito got a single in the first game and that cleared the last hurdle! The last game I watched was game 2. Arky got injured in the 3rd inning, with Scales replacing him. Then in the 8th, to my horror, HAL pinch hit Jeter for Scales (who I had selected as my non starter pinch hitter vs right). Jeter grounded out. HAL kept him in the game. We rallied, and Brown"s two out single in the ninth gave Jeter a second chance. A single would do it. Jeter was a late season addition. He had been dropped, and it was a no-brainer to pick him up. He was never one of my favorite players, and now as a Marlin's fan' seeing how he has gutted the team, my feelings have developed into active dislike!
Jeter struck out!
