OBA vs SLG

How do you weight OBA vs SLG when comparing cards? Consider guys like John Mayberry 7.10 and Cecil Cooper 1980. Is higher OBA always better than higher SLG?

Is getting on base via singles better than by walks?

It seems like in SOM getting on base is really important

For me this question is influenced by ballpark selection.

"Is getting on base via singles better than by walls?"

What's the difference? Either way, you're on 1st.

I'm sure Bill James prefers the walk. :lol:

To answer the specific question, I think TangoTiger has a discussion of this someplace on the internet and values OBP at 1.75 to 1.00 in most linear weighted formulas.

The Runs Created Formula (i.e. linear weights) used to priced the 200X games would value the events this way:

BB=.32 runs
1B=.48 runs
2B=.8 runs
3B=1.12 runs
HR=1.44 runs
Outs= (.0976) runs

There is more to the final pricing formula, but those are the basics.

If you want a more thorough background in those values, look up Paul Johnson estimated runs produced. I found those are the best linear formulas in estimating runs in the strat environment.

ATG is roughly based on those same values, but has diverged over time,

Technically 1787's response is correct, the value of the events is dependent on the ballpark environment as well as the entire pitcher/hitter pool for a specific league, but I have found that the raw values I posted do an accurate job of estimating runs without modifying them for specific environments.

This is good too, weighs defense into the equation

If you're trying to stack the bases for a three-run homer, save money and go for walks. If you want to advance or drive in runners, spend on singles.
