Top of the 8th.

In my settings, I have Linares coming in for Carty and Washington coming in for Garr. That's it.

SUBSTITUTION at C: Bruce Benedict
SUBSTITUTION at 1B: Joe Torre
SUBSTITUTION at LF: Ken Smith
SUBSTITUTION at RF: Terry Harper

Where are Linares and Washington? These are NOT my changes...

Please tell us, do you have Carty and Washington checked to be pulled for a defensive replacement on the hitter preferences page???

Carty and Garr are checked to be replaced on the hitters page by Linares and Washington.

If you have players selected to be replaced on the HITTERS PREFS page, those players WILL BE replaced no matter the situation or consequence.
If you use the Team Strategy Page, HAL will use a little more judgement in replacing players with a defensive sub.

IMO, in a still-close game, HAL flooded your replacements with LH killers to face David Clyde. He later subbed Linares for Smith.

Do you have defensive replacements marked on both the Hitters Prefs Page and the Team Strategy Page? If so, you may be giving HAL too many conflicting instructions.

On the hitters page, both Carty and Garr are selected to be pulled.

In the lineups page, Carty's backup is Linares, Garr's backup is Washington.

In the Team Strategy page, Linares is listed as Defensive Replacement in LF, and Washington is listed in RF.

That's why I asked if they were checked to be removed. If a hitter is checked he'll be pulled no matter what and HAL sometimes does crazy shit when that happens.

I NEVER check remove for defensive sub anymore.

egvrich,

This is an ATG theme league. I have the Braves. I'm limited in players that I can use.
So Carty and Garr, both 4's defensively, are set to be pulled for slightly better defensive guys (Linares and Washington)

I WANT them to be pulled, hence I have them checked.
I have their backups listed in the lineups as well as for defensive replacements.

If you are checking them to be removed on the hitter's prefs page then you'll have to put up with some crazy moves by HAL when he chooses to replace them, regardless of what you have listed in team strategy. If you do not check remove in hitter's prefs, but list your desired replacements in the strategy page, then in close games HAL will usually do what you want.

Checking 'remove' on the hitters prefs page has nearly always produced undesirable results for me. I never use that function because I can't reasonably guarantee the outcome.

Yes. I don't believe I have EVER used the Remove for Defensive Sub on the Hitters Prefs Page.

If I set defensive subs in the Team Strategy Page, HAL does those IF THAT DEFENSIVE SUB IS AVAILABLE, and it doesn't make a wreck of my defensive alignment. That way, if it's a perfect world, Linares comes in for Carty, but if Linares isn't available, HAL doesn't pull Carty and move Hubbard to LF. If Linares isn't available, Carty stays in because his "defense" (gulp) is better than whatever crazy decisions HAL would be forced into.

It's kinda like the Bullpen settings for me: Too many bullpen settings makes HAL make dumb, illogical decisions because he is often given conflicting information in a manager's chosen settings. Same with the Defensive Subs on the Hitters Pref page.
