Joe Sewell

PostThu Apr 30, 2020 4:37 pm

With new ATG 9 the greatest crime was still not fixed.

Hall of Famer Joe Sewell still a 4

So ridiculous.

Hardly a one dimensional player, Sewell led American League shortstops in fielding percentage three times and finished in the top five six times. He shifted to third base in 1929 and, after signing with the Yankees in 1931, was the regular third baseman for the Yankees club that won the 1932 World Series.

He played shortstop for eight straight years without missing a game!

No way was he a 4!!

They were not idiots back then. If his range was that bad they would have moved him to third early on.

Unfortunately that die was cast years ago. They rarely change range ratings unless the set is updated to super advanced. For all I know 1929 is Super Advanced.

I don't doubt there's merit in what you say. I wonder how he got pegged a 4. An old scouting report? They do get input from pro scouts. I don't know who saw him play. But it does sort of make his card useless.

So, the online guys don't have a whole lot of sway on the card ratings. Those come from the main company. For whatever reason, they felt he was a 4. Doesn't seem right when he was able to lead the league in assists. I mean, that may not mean he was a one for various reasons, it does tell you it's not likely he was a 4!

The high e-rats might be playing into it, but it really shouldn't if it's super advanced.

You'd have to call Hal at SOM HQ and ask him. ;)

based on sheer numbers...I think Sewell is lucky to be a 4 and not a 5,,,without seeing him play I can only rely on the following:

Joe Sewell
# of Years at SS: 9
Errors: 333
Fielding PCT: .951

Ozzie Smith
# of Years at SS: 19
Errors: 281
Fielding PCT: .978

Derek Jeter
# of Years at SS: 20
Errors: 254
Fielding PCT: .976

Ernie Banks
# of Years at SS: 20
Errors: 254
Fielding PCT: .976

Nomar
# of Years at SS: 11
Errors: 149
Fielding PCT: .968

Dick Groat
# of Years at SS: 14
Errors: 374
Fielding PCT: .961

Only Groat had more errors and he played 5 more years at SS then Sewell

Dahlen committed a TON of errors and is still rated a "1e40"....
Also didn't Dick Allen just get his defense SUBSTANTIALLY upgraded at 1b just a couple of days ago in ATG9 release....a BIG factor in his HUGE $$ increase for a card RARELY used? so I know they CAN change the defensive rating given a good enough reason.

I look at it this way: Sewell is a fantastic bargain as a DH because of the poor fielding rating! :D

1972 Allen & 1970 McCovey had the wrong defensive ratings in ATG8. You can check it by the Card Reader.

Sewell is a 4e59 on the Card Reader, which was somewhat normalized to 4e38.

I'd love to use him, but by Strat's perspective, he is correct

You are correct Brad and Hughie Jennings also had a ton...so in hindsight...I am guessing Sewell can be 1 40e also
