catcher has a -3 arm, Pitcher hold is -4, what is the lowest possible hold number deducted from the basestealer? flipside, Pitcher is a +9, see Syndagard, catcher is a +3, base runner is a 20-16, can the baserunner still be thrown out? what does the roll have to be to throw out the runner? thanks

Maximum a battery can be is -5 to +5 regardless of pitcher's hold or catcher's arm. So, as an example, if Syndergaard is +9 and your catcher is +3, max battery is +5. Holding runner on 1st adjusts that -2 to steal rating. If your battery is -5, holding runner on 1st brings that to -7 to steal. If base runner is held, even with a 20 for good lead, maximum is 19 or 5% chance of being thrown out (so if defense rolls a 20, runner is out). If runner is not held, then steal rating can go as high as 20. Hope that helps.

According to the info on "Hitters Card" about stealing:
Detailed steal safe chances (in parentheses at the end of the steal rating) -- If the runner gets a good lead (see number description to the left), the first number is the possibility he will be safe stealing, between 1-20. The second number is the possibility if he doesn't get a good lead. Nineteen is the highest number possible. A high first number indicates an accurate basestealer - if he gets a good lead, he usually makes it. A high second number means he is a true speed demon, able to steal even if he doesn't get a good lead.
So as I understand it, even with a pitcher/catcher hold combo is +5, a 20-16 base stealer would be, in effect, 19-19. The rationale from SOM's point of view is evidently that there always has to be at least a small chance that the stealer could be thrown out--if only because, since this is a game company, they want to add that smidge of tension and uncertainty to the action.

Correct. The only exception to this is when the runner isn't held. In that case, if the steal rating =>20, then you could have an automatic steal. Of course, if the catcher throws and rolls between 1-3, then you get a T-roll

this confuses me? AAA rated followed by *5-12/ (18-12). normally a AAA Base stealer is followed by 2-6,12/(20-16), 3-7/ (20-16), 20-15,19-15. so what's with the strange combo above?

A little more detail: Ignore the letter ratings. The * means the runner must be automatically held (thereby effecting the 1b and either 2b/ss's ranges). The 5-12 is a roll for whether you get a good lead or not. For example, if you roll between 5-12 with 2, 6-sided die, you get the good lead. Roll outside of the range and you don't (then you look at the second number, e.g., 12). In the example above, good lead you start with 18 (out of 20-sided die) and make adjustments (pitchers hold +/- Catcher's arm). This example is of a real speedster in that the likelihood of starting with an 18 is pretty high (90%). Most players with amazing good lead probabilities seem to get good leads starting with 15. Other examples above show good lead if you roll between a 2-6 and 12 or good lead if you roll between 3-7.
