Anyone here live on Long Island within commuting distance to Glen Head? If so please apply for the shipping clerk position. It has been vacant for a couple of years, I believe. It had been filled for probably the previous 30+ years by an elderly black gentleman who died at age 72. He was actually the only really nice person that I have ever encountered who worked at SOM. He was invariably pleasant to face to face customers at the little window in the bare bones waiting area for customers. He would freely engage in small talk and leave me feeling valued, at least by some one at SOM. The rest of the SOM office folks, just a handful of them really, were outright condescending and rude, especially on phone orders.

HAL himself was no prize. Yeah he has an avuncular demeanor but when I broached the notion of clutch pitching back in 1976 in a face to face conversation with Richman at the customer window, he said that "Pete Rose doesn't believe in clutch pitching", smiled dismissively and walked away.

In any event, if a member of our community could work there, maybe somebody just retired, we might be able to get a foot in the door and advocate for our interests, most of which are given the dismissive treatment HAL gave me 45 years ago.

You're referring to James Williams I believe. I used to call him the Big Cat a reference to Chicago Bears Offensive Tackle of the same name. If you happened to call there and he was the one who answered the phone, he was always friendly and helpful. Sad day for SOM when he passed..
