Through the years...

PostThu May 06, 2021 2:03 pm

We have had several threads where we posted a brief bio of ourselves to allow the community to get to know each other better. It has been quite some time since the last one and there are so many newer folks playing ATG since the onset of the pandemic, that this may be an idea whose time has come once again.

So, please allow me to introduce myself...

I am Bruce Steffek, the strat o matic "artist" (lol), formerly known as Petrosian, but currently as The Last Druid. I'm 65, and live in upstate New York close to the Vermont border, with my wife and golden retriever. I am a recently retired clinical psychologist who has been playing strat for almost fifty years. I like to play games: chess, poker, backgammon, bridge and strat, although I haven't played face to face SOM since late 90's. I enjoy ATG although I have little interest in baseball as it is played today. Made some good friends here over the years and have persisted with the game despite SOM's dismal record of customer service and support for the online game.

And Kenny Rogers croons "Through the Years"....

Enjoy distance running, tennis, landscaping, history and philosophy. A little guitar. Fave recreational book genres are things like Douglas Adams THGTTG, Stephen Donaldson, Tolkein, Stephen King, Thoreau, Poe.

Used to play DnD then first strat board C&D set was 1982 after seeing an ad in TSN's paper. Replayed the season solo but without restrictions. Somehow the Yankees made the playoffs ;) Was avid follower of the annual Baseball Digest/Prospectuses and began playing Boxscore Sports--a weekly mail-in version of Strat's Baseball Daily type game. Found strat on line in 2003-2004. Played a few 20xx years then started ATG III. Low volume player. Took a few year break and came back a few years ago.

Hope you all are doing well and good idea Petro/Bruce/Dru

Cool thread...

Tim Linville, 58, grew up in New Castle, IN. Pitched for Butler University 81-85. That's why more times than not you'll see stud SP on my teams  . My claim to fame is that I got to pitch 2 innings during a tryout at Riverfront Stadium
Teammate in college got me started on Strat. Couldn't tell you how many dice games we rolled over the years. Started back in ATG I and played pretty regular for a few years before taking a break. I remember those early days fondly. All leagues were frenzy and you'd be sitting there hitting the refresh button, hoping your dial-up didn't crash.

Studied Buisness / Accounting. Tried accounting, wasn't for me. Went to business and spent 20 yrs. running truck stops for Flying J / Pilot and a couple Mom and Pop's. Burnt out on that and went back to my 2nd love golf.

Currently Assistant Groundskeeper at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Anderson, IN. If your travels ever bring you to Indiana, I'll hook you up to a round of golf and some Strat talk.

Great to meet you all and look forward to seeing you in future leagues!

I am Dan Martinelli and have been playing strat since my older brother introduced me to it around 1968. we purchased the all time great cards (National and American Leagues), did a two team draft and played a 7 game series - good fun to see the 1927 Ruth go against the 1965 Koufax.

I am a Bay Area native and recently moved from San Mateo to Brentwood Ca. You will see my teams as the San Mateo Seals in honor of the San Francisco Seals. Once in a while I will be the San Mateo Giants. I usually play small ball teams although I have dabbled with some different style teams. I did a BB team with T. Williams, Yost, Joost, Ricky Henderson and Willie Mac which was a lot of fun especially when going up a pitcher that was a bit wild like San McDowell.

I too recently retired after a career in Account and Finance (I am a CPA) and I am enjoying life with my wife of 40 years and I am back into running everyday and just started playing Pickle Ball - The tell tale sign that I am over 60, I am 64 to be exact. I have a pretty cool baseball card collection with a 1965 Topps set all graded and SF Giants team sets and league leaders also graded from around 1963 to 1970.

I still like strat ATG and started playing that when it was run by the Sporting News. Thanks Druid for getting this started.

Regards

Kaviksdad here: I'm Marc Walsh and originally from Seattle, now residing in the college town of Vermillion South Dakota. Will turn 65 soon and have been playing the online Stratomatic game since discovering it in the early 2000's. I'm one of the few here that didn't play the board game and can't throw a 12 sided dice to save my life. I learned by asking questions of the old time greats and then by trial and error. My teams usually carry Washington state monikers - a little bit of homesickness seeping in I think. I collect old baseball cards and am currently working on completing a 1968 Topps set. 1968 holds a special reverence for me: it was in 1968 that the American League awarded an expansion franchise to Seattle and my beloved Pilots were born. They only played in Seattle the one season before being hijacked to Milwaukee on the way home from Arizona but I'll always remember going to Sicks Stadium with my dad and seeing all my AL heroes.

egvrich here, formerly known as Coach Rich.

I started a thread like this quite a while back. Named it after my ex-brother in law. He used to play a party game called, "Let's Play Get To Know You" and then he'd always say "I'll go first" and proceed to talk about himself for 15 minutes straight. Thanks for resurrecting it Bruce.

58 years old, Chicago area my entire life, lifelong Cubs fan. Married with two grown sons. Expecting my first grandchild next month. Along the way I coached every youth sport imaginable including baseball for over 20 years including several years after my sons were done playing, hence the original Coach Rich moniker.

Collected baseball cards as a kid and actually hosted/put on a couple of baseball cards shows as an adult back in the late 80's/early 90's. My prized collectibles are complete 1970 & 1971 Topps Baseball sets and PSA 8 graded rookies of Michael Jordan, Walter Payton, Billy Williams & Ron Santo.

I recently sold my family appliance business after 40+ years doing that and am now "semi-retired". I've been writing a lot of business articles relevant to the appliance industry and have had many published in a trade magazine. I am also dipping my toes into the consulting waters in the appliance industry.

I just finished and am in the professional editing process on a 120,000 word fantasy/high fantasy novel. Think Lord of the Rings meets Harry Potter, though not even suggesting it is even remotely close to being that good. It is loosely based upon a D & D character of mine that was rolled up over 40 years ago and is still alive today.

First played C & D Baseball as a 12 year old for a few years. Even created and typed up on 3x5 cards my own "current season" strat cards of the Cubs a year or two later. I ended up introducing Sports Illustrated Football to my D & D buddies and that morphed into C & D Strat Football. Played in that league for about 25 years. Happened upon Strat Online Football 10-12 years ago which led me to ATG where I fell in love with the biggest bane of my existence.

I prefer 80 mill smallball teams. But also love to experiment with stupid idea/theme teams.
