Has SOM explained why 1969 has to be taken away? So many other seasons sitting there wasting away.

They have not. Why not leave it as an option? The 20XX seasons that have been available for play in the past and currently are mothballed are 2001 - 2006. I cut my teeth on 2004 so that is my hope. I think they should leave all of the past Seasons open for subscription. A 20XX archived Season would be easy for them but, based on nothing, I'm guessing it's a Season that hasn't been seen before.

I suspect it has something to do with the fact that the majority of their income still comes from physical cards and windows game sets. Basically, they want you to buy the 69 set if you want to keep using it. I have no proof of this, mind you.

Obviously, something in the 1970s or 1980s would be best considering their customer base.
1894 would be an extremely small set. I don't think it would work well as a draft league.
Of course, they should keep 1969, and 2001-2006 available for all time. I am not really sure why they can not do this.
But I must say I am extremely excited for the new retro set. I am going to guess it will be something between 1975 and 1989. 1994 might also be a possibility...
But my ultimate guess is 1977.

I have another theory Steve. They need to make the '69 set disappear because it is now a "Cadillac " year, based on laborious research which, when compared to the original '69 cards, shows just how faulty and primitive the original cards were. The recent addition of the 1969 Fritz Peterson to ATG 9 is a perfect example.
And of course they don't even pretend to bother about upgrading the ATG 9 Pool with the 1969 "Cadillac" cards just as they never did with the 1959 cards once they researched and upgraded that season's cards.
I'd love to see an ATG 10 with the only changes being replacing obsolete ATG cards with their Cadillac season equivalents.
But hey, "be well and play well" as long as you are pure vanilla and trigger no one.

Besides the price what is different about the 1969 Fritz cards?

Sigh.
The original '69 Peterson card is now only found in the 60's game.
https://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/39467/1660/1/60That card is a 1L, the superadvanced is a 2L.
The hold changed from -3 to -4, and there is 1 # vs righties on the superadvanced card.
But the huge difference is 12 gba's on the superadvanced Peterson card vs none on the pre-superadvanced card.
