Career cards

PostMon Feb 07, 2022 11:38 am

What does everybody think of having a set called ATG Career cards? Each card in the set would be based on the player’s entire MLB career instead of single seasons. Therefore only one card per player. Maybe a player would have had to have a minimum number of games played, or ABs, or IPs to qualify for a card. Therefore, no quirky cards. Just a thought, and probably not likely to happen, but to me, “All Time Greats” imply greatness over a players career. This would not replace the current ATG9 set, just be an additional set.

Wow I love the idea! Strat does have a product like this called the Career Historical Disk but the reviews I've read are not very good, the major complaint seems to be that a lot of the fielding ratings don't seem to make much sense.

I would be intrigued as well

If the only complaint is defensive rating, Derek Jeter is listed as a 1 range already so that says it’s BS anyway.

Well, Jeter was always the guy with the biggest gap between reputation and metrics. He did win multiple Gold Gloves after all. (Although I agree that he shouldn't have won those nor should he have been a 1.) But in general Strat's fielding ratings are excellent, they're what sets it apart from other baseball sims. The CHD ratings I've seen complaints about are like, guys getting a 3 despite getting 1s for almost their entire careers, that kind of thing.

The career historical disk Strat puts out has career averages and normalized ratings. It also has defensive ratings over the course of a career, which, as mentioned, results in folks like Rickey Henderson and Tim Raines being rated 4’s in the OF.:-/ Trammell is a 4 at SS.

I have used these disks a LOT in the past. I generate my player pool by rolling random years (the set denotes a player by their rookie year), then dump all the players from those years into the pool.

I’d be for it, but I would ask what the minimum number of PAs, IPs, seasons, etc would be to be included. I would think you wouldn’t want guys who played 1 or 2 seasons included.

Where would I find this Career historical disk?

They update it annually and release it along with the new season.

I did the analysis a few years back, taking each individual year roster disk and averaging out the fielding ratings for each player, weighted by their plate appearances each year, the historical disk ratings are way off from the averages across the players career.

I think this is a great idea, would love to see something career based implemented as an option for the ATG player set. If you took the average from a five-year period that was represenative of the peak of a player's career, that would be good, or you could cherry-pick five representative seasons from a player's career, just like they do for the mystery games. Whatever it takes, it is in the best interest of SOM to pursue this. Other competing baseball simulation sites use career stats, they should seriously consider doing it here.
