In 1973 Mickey Lolich started 42 games and had 17 complete games pitching over 300 innings, wouldn't you think he'd be a S9* instead of an S8*, just wondering.

In 1973 Lolich had 11 starts of 9 or more innings and 13 fewer than 8 innings. The other 20 starts were in the 8 - 8.2 range.

One wonders if there was a pattern to the 17 complete games--where they mostly home or away or....?

Info available on Baseball Reference; 7 CG at home, 10 CG away from home.

So in 31 of 42 starts, he went AT LEAST 8 innings. I think that probably justifies a 9 rating ...

Not sure how they determine S9 vs S8, so I looked at the Tom Seaver 1969 card that is an S8 to see why he was not S9. He went 8 or more innings in 24 of his 35 starts that year. He had 18 CG's and 17 starts of 9 or more innings. In 1973 he was listed as an S9 when he went 8 or more innings 22 out of 36 starts with 18 CG's and 18 starts of 9 or more innings. Why is one card S9 and the other S8 for very comprable innings per game statistics?

Sadly, only HAL knows for sure. I think as a simple rule if a pitcher averaged over 8 innings per start, he should an easy 9. But, it seems complete games SHOULD factor into the equation as well. If Lolich had 17 complete games, it wasn't just a one off, clearly he had the ability to pitch 9 innings or more.

In 1973 there were only 3 starts that Tom Seaver did not go at least 6 innings, there were 2 additional games where he did not come out for the 7th inning or a total of 5 games where he didn't go into the 7th. He averaged 8.0 innings per start
In 1968 there were 5 games where he did not make at least 6 innings, there were also 4 games where he went exactly 6 so in 9 of his starts in 1968 he did not come out for the 7th inning. He is an upper tier S8 averaged 7.5 innings per start

Mickey Lolich did not go beyond 6 innings in 11 of his starts in 1973. He averaged 7.5 innings per start, he is not an S9.
In 1971 Mickey Lolich did not go beyond 6 innings in 4 of his starts that year he is an F9 he averaged 8.4 innings per start.

1910 Ed Walsh had 2 games that he started where he did not go at least 6 innings. He is an S9 he relieved between several games. He came in a reliever in 7 games

1974 Fergie Jenkins had started 3 games where he did not go at least 6 innings there was not a single instance where he took himself out after pitching six innings- he is an S9 he averaged 8 innings per start.

1973 Mickey Lolich is not an S9.

I think it would be an interesting twist to have some of the 500IP oldtimers available to pitch on 2 games rest.
Silver King would be worth about $16 million.

On Seaver, I was asking about 1969...........not 1968. In 1969 he had four starts of six or less innings (one RP of 1/3), but every other game was over seven innings, with 18 CG's and 17 games of 9 or more innings. 24/35 were over 8 IP.
