Quite a loss. I remember an article from my early youth - think it was Sport Magazine - describing the excitement stolen bases generated with those Dodger teams, focusing on him and Willie Davis. Also fondly remember his time with the Pirates. RIP.

He was a disruptive force on the basepaths in the 1960s, when runs were scarce and the stolen base had greater value. Pitchers and catchers were intimidated by him. If he had managed to draw more walks, nowadays he'd be compared favorably to Rickey and might have been elected to the HOF.
This will be the 5th year in a row MLB leader in SB less than 50.

1. Read his autobiography, "On the Run." Brutally honest, it's kind of a cross between "The Natural" and "Breaking Bad." Page-turningest baseball bio I've ever read.
2. DON'T read Bill James' slanderous capsule about him in "The Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract." "He's trashy and vulgar, and doesn’t have the sense that God gave a cockroach," said James of Maury. Is that how people treat each other, Mr. James?
3. For more reasons than I want to list here, Maury Wills is a Hall of Famer if there ever was one.
