July 24, 1983 - Blue Rage

PostFri Mar 10, 2023 12:53 am

My favorite band that I have been lucky enough to see play multiple times, U2, had come of age in 1983 with War, which just had its 40th anniversary at the end of February.

There is another anniversary that I remember like yesterday from that early high school summer.

A certain blue-uniformed "maniac" who was triggered when Billy Martin used a jedi mind trick on a few umpires to convince them to... well you may know the rest, but if not, this version is ad free, and at around 2:40, I can almost feel like I was watching the rage all over again for the first time.
Good times.

Palmtana--that was great.

Brett was fun to watch; such a fierce competitor. Even 30 years after as at your link, he still had an intensity about him that's infectious.

Fun to hear how he asked for the bat back after selling it, to give it to the HOF.
Listening to the tech discussion on bats from back then also cool.
Great link all the way around.
Cheers

He was also gentlemanly--deferring the repeating of what he yelled at McClelland because he said they aren't the types of things you want to repeat in front of children or on the news.
Cannot say that same sense of decency is common today.

I'm A Royals Fan, but I would take him in the bottom of the ninth with 2 outs and runners on over in other player of his era.
Best clucth hitter I ever saw.

Well as a Yankee fan, I will always give Brett his due.

Especially because every time he was up I'd have to close my eyes and say a prayer. He was a beast in late innings against the Yankees. His line against them was .307/.365/.504 and it feels like that was always when it mattered.

The amazing thing about his career splits is how unremarkably even they are no matter how you split them. Day, night, # outs, RISP, high leverage, low leverage etc.

Remarkable
