Ed has an e51 rating. I had never noticed pitcher error ratings before. He is 11-7 for my ATG 9 team (team record at this point is 44-31). He has a 3.40 ERA but 15 errors. He has given up 80 runs but only 61 earned runs. The 80 runs is 7th worst in the league and the worst with his ERA or better. The team (including pitchers) has 74 errors at this point which is not great in the league (bottom 25% approx). His salary is $8.92. I looked because he seemed to make 1 or 2 errors per start for an extended time.

I checked Diamond Dope and they don’t seem to measure pitcher errors. Am I wrong?

I assume the e51 rating is taken into account in pricing but I’m not a big enough stats genius to know for sure.

Is he a good value or not? (assume approx neutral BP - yankee 2005)

The free agent search lets you search for e ratings but only at a certain level or better. I can’t figure out how to search for bad pitcher e ratings to avoid.

Other than learning my lesson with Seward, how do I avoid such bad e ratings for pitchers in the future?

He also has a 20 for wild pitches -- unforgivable. While I like the pitching rolls aspect of his card, and have used him, when I noticed these atrocious secondary aspects, I don't use him anymore. A wild pitch rating of 20 is like giving up a lot of stolen bases. And then those e51 errors you mention makes him very difficult to play.

As to your question, you just need to scrutinize the pitcher's card, see if he has these negative secondary issues like errors and wild pitches, balks, hold rating etc.

These are the "Little Things" that people tend to overlook. I have lost championships on passed balls & wild pitches more than once.

Everything Hack said is correct. I try to keep my WP & Balk ratings below 5 for my pitchers and my E rating below 10 if possible. As well as a non brutal (preferably negative) hold rating.

That e51, unless I'm mistaken, basically means that if he pitched every inning of every game of the season he'd be projected to commit 51 errors. So as an every 4th day starter, you should expect around 13 errors from him.

The $12.92M Greg Maddux card is a case study in near perfection on secondary issues. Zeroes for wild pitches, balks, fielding errors. Only blemish is is +1 hold rating, but he keeps runners off the bases as well as anyone. Also has GBAs all over his card for double plays. :)
