Long live Dick Groat, an awesome all-around athlete and decent human being -- quite a great basketball player too.
I grew up in the Pittsburgh area, Mount Lebanon and Bethel Park, to be exact. Let's go Bucs!

Losing some great ones - Dick Groat on Thursday and Mike Shannon on Saturday.
Both key members of the 1964 Champion St Louis Cardinals. R.I.P. fellas!

On the evening of October 13, 1960 in a Pittsburgh, PA hospital bed there, was Tony Keubek, the New York Yankee Shortstop. He was being kept overnight for observation after bruising his larynx (when a bad hop caused a potential double play ball to hit him in the throat).
On the floor hallway, the saddened Kubek overheard the merriment from hospital staff, jubilant that several hours earlier, the Pirates had defeated the New York Yankees to become world champions (on the famous walk off homerun by Mazeroski).
Tony Kubek looked up and saw a visitor, a balding man in street clothes he did not immediately recognize. It was Dick Groat (the Pittsburgh Shortstop), looking in on the condition of his fellow shortstop.
We all hear and tell many baseball stories and love reading them and relating them ---- that's about the coolest baseball related story because it occurred after the crowds had gone home and the field was empty.
The Pirates had won and Dick Groat (who won the MVP award that year, and the batting award), had the where with all to visit his fellow ballplayer.
Hats off to Dick Groat.

Dick Groat has been on many of my teams, either as a bulletproof backup SS or as a starter. He's one of those players who has mutiple cards inexpensive cards, every one of which is useable. In fact, he's on at least one of time teams right now.
I didn't know the story about visiting Kubek. That makes me like him even more. And Groat was the NL MVP that year!

Bob Costas had one of his greatest 10 or however many World Series Games which featured the 7th game of the 1960 World Series. And somewhere in that show that story was related - I think by Dick Groat himself. He was a guest along with Bill Virdon, Bill Mazeroski, Hal Smith and Bobby Richardson of the Yankees. In the audience was Franco Harris along with other 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates. Very enjoyable and interesting show - lots of funny anecdotes.
