It means they changed a parameter that is a mystery in the first place.

All it means is that if you select the role of "middle man", that will now mean from the 3rd inning through the 6th, instead of the 1st through the 6th.

Has anyone had the experience of letting HAL manage the bullpen? Aside from using a 9L and 9R, short innings (1-2), I let HAL make the decisions. My pens are usually 4 or 5, low $ relievers. In a small ball team this seems to work very well. This advice was given to me by egvrich. I'm only now trying it out in a different type of strategy. Comments?

This is how I do it, on advice I saw posted by egvrich. I like the results better than trying to micro manage the settings.

I've taken to doing the same thing.
I will change it up if I find a particular reliever is not getting enough innings.
I also assign specialist roles and a mop up man .That's usually it.
Hal does better with choices.

At the time of my "retirement", I had played around with what I believe to be an even better, albeit a bit more expensive strategy in NON-DH Leagues ...
(2) Decent $2-$2.5M Relievers (Gossage & Howe being a good example) - No settings at all
(1) 9L Set to Quick Hook avoid RH
(1) 9R Set to Quick Hook avoid LH
With this setup the 9L & 9R seemed to get used more wisely and have much better slash lines and giving HAL two solid options outside of that seems to be sufficient.
The Decent relievers will get 80% of the innings and the specialists will face mostly the correct sided hitters.

I find the the "less is more" strategy with regards to bullpen roles to pretty effective. just like in the movie, the more orders you give hal, the more likely it is he kills the crew.
Don't worry about "saves" as a stat--largely useless.
If he as some reasonable choices, he is more likely (but not guaranteed) to make the reasonable choice.

Last night's series, 2 different teams, I had a specialist stay in to give up 7 and 12 runs in a single inning.
One team has Arroyo and Liska set as middle/set/closer.
The other has no settings on Arroyo and Liska.
