It works the same as defense at any other position ... the lower range is better (though less impactful at P than SS, for instance).

You have to look at the player card to get the range and error ratings.

https://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/40 ... 292/466653

Ferdie Schupp is a 2e36.

You can read the pitcher's card from left to right on the top right corner:

e36 #1WR pitcher-2 starter(8)
bunting-D relief(5)/0

This means that Schupp has an error rating of 36. His pitcher hitting card is card #1 (worst of 1-8). He has W power (weak, other option is N, for strong power). He bats right handed. His range is a 2 at the pitcher position. He is a starter with fatigue of 8.

His bunting is a D (not great). He has a 5 endurance when used as a RP, and a 0 for a closer rating (closer ratings are not used in the ATG set.

Thank you. I do understand all that but I appreciate the help. To clarify, I want to know the exact effect of the pitcher defense range. So for example, I'd like to see a chart showing the numbers for a 1 rated defender vs a 3 rated. I also can't quite seem to find when and how the pitcher defense is checked. I see on some pitchers they have a "p" result, so I assume they get checked there, but many pitchers cards do not have that. I didn't see it on hitter cards either. Checked the wiki and main site but had no luck.

Here's a link to the super advanced fielding chart. If you zoom in on the product photo, you can almost make out all the details. :) Good luck!

Very helpful to see that! Thanks :) Any idea when the pitcher's defense rating/range is checked and how? I've heard it doesn't come up that much but I'm curious to learn more.

On a GB P (x).

Again, looking at the Ferdie Schupp card that I referenced earlier. The 6-11 vs. RH batters is a GB(p)X.

Any GB( )X roll is a defense check based on the position referenced in the parenthesis.

Thank you again. My eyes must have passed over it multiple times :D So every pitcher has a small chance to have their defense check but the impact seems to be high when it happens. Interesting.

Yes. Very small chance. It's like 2 out of 108 possibilities each plate appearance.

If a pitcher pitches 300 innings with a WHIP of about 1.25, he is facing an average of just under 4.25 hitters per inning ... resulting in a total batters faced of nearly 1,200 in a full season. With less than 2% of those plate appearances resulting in a check of pitcher defense, it could be only 20 times per season or thereabouts. So the difference between a gold glove caliber pitcher 1e0 vs. the worst possible defender 5e51 might only allow 20 more base runners over the course of an entire season.

On the other hand, that 1e0 guy is probably turning a dozen or so double plays on those hits/errors that his lesser counterparts are making. How much is 12 extra double plays worth in 300 innings? :) LOL Baseball is amazing!

It is indeed! I have come to realize over time that very small numbers can have a significant impact on a season. It's easy to dismiss them as "So small, not worth consideration", but disaster can strike at the worst possible moments. One slipup can lead to 3 or 4 runs scored, and so on. And some ballparks are more forgiving than others, so both ends of the spectrum (pitching parks and hitting parks) have vastly different levels of punishment for those slipups.

The chance of hitting a (P)X is actually 2 chances out of 216, less than 1%. A starter throwing 300 IP would face approximately 1,300 batters per season. That suggests a (P)X will be hit 12 times per season on average. This can be double-checked on the X Tot column on the Sim Fielding page.
