Impressively bad substitution

Here's one of the dumbest substitutions I've ever seen. Close game in the 4th, and Fred Stanley goes down (who was subbing in for my normal 2b Duane Kuiper). So he decides to put my 1 CF, Duane Murphy (not carded at 2b) in at 2nd, then put DH-Only OTTO VELEZ in to play Center Field as a 5(+5)e25! what??? Oh, I also had 2 guys who _could_ play CF (both 2s) just sit there on the bench...

BOTTOM OF INNING 4
0 O.Smith 1-9 Ground Out (SS) b-0 F9
1 T.Kennedy 2-7 Strike Out b-0 F9
2 F.Stanley 3-2 HBP b-1 F9
SUBSTITUTION at PR: Otto Velez
INJURY: F. Stanley for 1 more games
2 1 W.Backman 5-9 Fly Out (RF) b-0 F9
TOP OF INNING 5
SUBSTITUTION at 2B: Dwayne Murphy
SUBSTITUTION at CF: Otto Velez

Now my normal 2b was already injured, so maybe a difficult substitution scenario for HAL. But anyone sane would have left my 1 in CF, and put Velez (or anyone else) in at 2nd, or if HAL insisted on Murphy at 2nd he could have put an actual outfielder in at CF.

I wonder who's glove Otto used?

I'll copy this to the ATG Forum. More traffic over there.

Murphy was not carded at 2B but was at SS and did play 2B in 1987 so that is probably why HAL chose him. Otto Velez has in his history more games in Outfield than as DH. HAL if left to substitute will put in replacements without regard to defensive rating if you do not complete a full substitution range.

The depth charts created when setting lineups have no impact on in-game substitutions, nor do they purport to. They only affect the initial pre-game lineup.

I can sort of get picking Murphy to play 2nd, as nobody available on my team was carded at 2b and Murphy was carded at SS, so OK. But here were his choices to go into CF:

Scott, T. S CF2(0)e7 4L .88M
Clark, B. R CF2(-1)e3 3L .53M
Velez, O. R DH - 3L .50M

So, the choice he made was the .50 DH only...to play CF... Certainly didn't pick him to pinch run as he was a D stealing rating and was 1-11 running and Scott is 1-16/A and Clark is 1-15/D. Also checked that Bobby Clark and Otto Velez were set to "avoid RHP" and there was a RHP in the game the previous inning, but I don't think HAL looks at that for defensive substitutions.

I absolutely don't buy that HAL went and looked at other cards not involved in this game and somehow saw Otto was a good choice at CF.

Same kinda thing again with me. Not with injury. Multiple times down stretch in barnstormer 6 league I have players don't not pitch hit for and again last night game they pitch hit in end of game for my 3 and 4 and 5 hitters in lineup and you can guess the result. I am burning what credits I have cause like other posts I am tired of late season collapses and moves in playoffs that have a great impact on results even though you have checks what not to do.

Lance Parrish was hurt in the previous game. Have Petway ready to start the game, that goes as planned. No other catchers on the roster.
Petway gets pulled for a pinch hitter.
Judy Johnson goes in at catcher.
The last catcher on the roster shouldn't be pulled for a pinch hitter.

TOP OF INNING 9
SUBSTITUTION at 1B: Pete Lacock
0 J.Gordon 4-6 Double (CF) b-2 F9
SUBSTITUTION at PH: Judy Johnson (R)-----------------------Pinch hit for Petway---------
0 2 J.Johnson 4-7 Single (RF) 2-H b-1 F8
0 1 A.Trammell 4-11 Force Play (SS) 1-o b-1 F8
1 1 T.Williams 5-4 Single & Error - 3B 1-3 b-2 gb(3B)x F3
1 23 F.Howard 6-9 Ground Out (SS) b-0 gb(SS)x F2
2 23 T.Kluszewski 2-9 Fly Out (CF) b-0 F2
BOTTOM OF INNING 9
SUBSTITUTION at C: Judy Johnson

Judy Johnson pinch hit for Ted Williams.
I may need to drop Judy Johnson just to stop this madness.

Without seeing the game or the team it's hard to say what's going on, but do you have Williams' "Don't PH for vs..." checked for both LHP and RHP in hitter preferences?

I haven't had to set "Don't PH" until this team. Now I have the whole team set that way.
There's nothing logical about a nickel guy hitting for Ted Williams.
