Barts Alternative History. 1.0

You may have heard of the concept of alternative histories. You may have even played some in Strat o Matic. The thing about an alternative history though is a different decision can make some vast changes.

In this version of alternative histories teams use a system that many leagues did, like an infant NBA or the USFL which provides territorial rights for players born within the general area. Here’s how it works. There are 16 territories to choose from. Once the owners are filled a random order will determine who picks which territory first. 12 territories will be selected. Some are states, some are multiple states and some are outside the US Borders but each territory will have first shot at a player born in their territory.

Each team will select a city that is within the territory. It does not need to be a city with major league ties at all. Or it can be. That choice is yours. Choose your city and name your team. But you must keep it throughout the 20 seasons that the simulation runs. (Owners may add a designator on the end such as a Roman numeral or year designation if they wish).
As we move through we will play with players who were active during the season that we are playing. So in season 1 all the players will have been active between 1870 and 1914. After season 1 the players who retired before 1915 will retire and a new crop of rookies who entered baseball between 1915 and 1921 will be available.

Each team will have a list of players that were born in their region that are entering the league. Before we reach Game 156 each team must designate the player that they are protecting for their team. If they do not have an option they can wait for part 2. If there is an option though the team must claim him, even if they don’t really want the player. Of a team does not May a claim by the end of game 155 they will be deemed to have chosen their highest priced player at that point. Luck of the draw sometimes. Part 2 is between the end of game 162 and the start of the draft after Game 162 (so basically a 48 hour period) teams may steal a player that 1) was unclaimed by another region and 2) died in your territorial rights area. So for instance. Let’s suppose in season 2 the owner of the western states used his territorial rights on Ken Williams (born OR). In the part 2 round any other player who was born in the West but died in another territory could be snatched up. So Ohio could grab Oscar Heavy Johnson (born KS, died OH) or the Midwest could take Bullet Joe Rogan (born OK, died MO). Again a team that did not have a round 1 option but which has an option here must make a selection but nobody else has to make one. Note that selecting a player here to steal requires a team to return their original territorial pick back to the player draft pool. You are only getting one territory protection, this is just an opportunity to upgrade if you desire.
You may not trade territory picks. You may trade the player after you have selected him.
After the season ends there will be a six round draft of all eligible rookies who were not
protected progressing in reverse standing order. Any teams without a territorial pick that year will have a supplementary pick between round 1 and 2. In the event there are multiple teams without a territorial pick the Supplementary picks will be in inverse standing order. (Currently I project no territory picks for Rest of World in seasons 2 and 3, Caribbean in years 5 and 6, Texas in year 17 and Pennsylvania in year 20)

Season 1 is going to run a little differently

For Season 1. Each owner will designate 4 players who were born in their territory (spreadsheet to be provided for your convenience). Once the four players are all claimed for the territorial rights teams will have a 24 hour window to use the death rights claim. After 24 hours the draft will run in the following order

1. Deep South
2. Caribbean
3. Carolina
4. Southeast
5. Illinois
6. Rest of World
7. Texas
8. Ohio
9. New York.
10. West
11. Appalachia
12. California
13. New England
14. Pennsylvania
15. Mid Atlantic
16. Midwest

After the initial 4 are posted and a 24 hour period has passed to allow anyone to select a replacement from the deceased the draft will run on the message board for 21 rounds. Any player eligible for season 1 that was not protected by territorial rights is eligible to be drafted.

Season 2 and beyond

At the end of Season 1 players will retire and each team makes their territorial picks and there is a five round draft. Any team that hasn’t made a selection within 12 hours from the previous pick may be skipped and when they can return can make their pick at any time.

Be aware of your R0 position. There are limited numbers but with the addition of the NEL players there are enough each season for each team to have 4. Now. Understand thst may mean you are playing someone at R0 that you would rather have at another position. Charleston, Haines, and Luque Spring immediately to mind as players you might not want as R0 but may have to play there. Here is the rule. You may not select a 5th R0 eligible player until Round 5 of the draft. You may trade for a 5th R0 but may not hold a sixth reliever only at any point That gives every team the opportunity to make sure they have 4 in place. By my count every season we play has at least 51 R0 pitchers available but that’s including the guys listed above. There are enough you just may not end up with the ones you want.

Salary cap for all seasons will be 95M. We are leaving it here to keep it fairer. So if California for example wants to use its territory pick in consecutive seasons on Dimaggio, Williams and Snider or the Deep South wants Mays, Aaron and Mccovey they can but it will eat up 1/3 of the salary cap and they will have to make concessions elsewhere.
Spreadsheet will be sent to all owners who provide me with their email addresses

We will be using a DH

Stadiums.

Each region will be assigned five stadiums all efforts are made to make such stadiums representative of the teams that played within a region however not all regions have five stadiums that were used while others have extras. So some are used to augment as necessary.
Each owner may use any of the five stadiums in any order they please. They may stay in one stadium the entire 20 seasons or they may use all five. However, once they have used a stadium and departed it they can not go back and use it again, that stadium has been demolished for the region.

Here are the stadium assignments.
