Big money Platoons

PostThu Aug 15, 2024 6:07 pm

Just curious on what everyone’s thoughts on spending a good portion of money on a dominant platoon? I know in general a lot of players aren’t crazy about any platoon and have expressed their frustration with seeing blowers and Mercer and Gates Brown and those types dominate leagues, but has anyone ever really experimented with larger platoons in a $80m cap?
I’m currently in one league where I have a $9m platoon in centerfield and it’s been dominating so far. I have the $5m 1978 Fred Lynn and the $4m 1991 Kirby Puckett. Both play elite defense and Lynn is hitting .347 with 17hrs slugging .544 and Puckett is hitting .406 with 13hrs slugging .641 through 111 games.

I’ve definitely messed around with some others before but I’d have to search through my teams to see how well the others have done.

At $80 the only one of that size I'd consider would be Brown/Galarraga. But if there are enough LHPs to make Galarraga viable, then Maas or Ben Taylor would probably be slightly more efficient than Brown. Any other combo of that size I think you're overpaying for one side or the other.

There are ones that can be worth it, such as:

Joe Jackson & Shano Collins
Jordy Mercer & Gates Brown
I've also done it with Torriente & Shano Collins.

You don't need to spend a ton on a lefty killer, but there'd better be enough RHP's in the league to justify it with an expensive righty killer.
