in CF. never used Wilson in the field for obvious reasons but I am curious if his offense more than overcomes his defensive liabilities?

I'm a little biased when it comes to Hack Wilson. :)

Anecdotally, I've had decent success, though not sure how to calculate his overall WAR value in a given season, which might answer your question more precisely. On this $140M team -- https://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/sim/1786820 -- I had Hack in CF and Kiner in LF and Sosa in RF, still won 86 games and the championship.

Wilsom had a .989 fielding average, made 5 errors and was 65 for 84 in X rolls. Overall -- and I believe defense is a team concept – this team had a .980 fielding average, 636 for 905 on X rolls (not so good). Arky Vaughan was the SS. It was an offensive juggernaut, scoring 1,128 runs.

So, my simple answer is that with Hack (or Kiner playing left field), your overall team needs to score a lot of runs.

well I've entered a team to give him a go, once it's drafted if I get him and my memory doesn't lapse, I'll update so Hack can keep tabs on the Hackster!

I've had a lot of success with the cheaper Hack on bomber teams.

A 3 in CF is not that risky-- I've used Jimmy Wynn ($7.59M), the "Toy Cannon," quite a bit on successful righty bomber teams, batting him leadoff because he has great OBP and homer value. Love that card for the money in a $80 or $100M league.

Here's one $80M league where Wynn had 52 homers, a .455 OBP, and 152 runs scored leading off: https://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/1790775

AND, most amazingly, Wynn had a 1.000 fielding percentage (no errors), and was 56 of 72 in X rolls! Go figure.

In real life, a very underrated player. I'd like to see another Wynn card in the ATG set.

I always try to have a 1 or 2 at SS (especially) and 2B, you get more X changes there than CF.
