Kal started at C for me twice last night (and threw out Willie Wilson stealing, for what it's worth). My starter (Ted Simmons) was injured, but, of course, I had another C available (Rick Cerone). In the first game, Cerone came in as a defensive replacement late. In the second, he came in as a defensive replacement at 3B.
It's more like double secret player positions. In these two games which occurred last Tuesday (1-21 if anyone's keeping track), Hal suddenly put Minoso behind the plate because Stargell was sick of playing RF and Roger Repoz wanted to get in the game:

While I am familiar with HAL starting an unrated catcher due to the starting catcher being hurt and the backup being a primary DH, I don't think I've ever seen him straight up sit the backup in favor of an unrated player. Granted, I'd rather have Daniels' bat than Cerone's, but damn.
That's fascinating. I see that HAL also decided to have McGwire and Thompson switch defensive positions at the same time Cerone entered the game, this despite the fact that Thompson was moving to 3B, where he is not rated.
