Always. Then the games begin and the weaknesses are exposed. I've completed five teams and have only now finally managed to field a team that is guaranteed to crack .500.
The over-optimism probably has something to do with the high quality of players you get in a 12 team league, especially with the $80 million budget. A lineup that includes Stargell, Bando, Billy Williams, Santo... and a rotation that includes Gibson and Fergie, naturally you'd think you can't possibly lose, until you come up against a team with Reggie, Dick Allen, Morgan, Rice...
That's why I'm starting to prefer the $60 million format-- makes for more realistic teams, teams with two or maybe three superstars, a handful of good players, six or seven role players, and six or seven scrubs, closer to what you'd find in real baseball.
Teams loaded with all star lineups and all star rotations, while it's fun to fantasize-- the player who hits more hitters cards on offense and more pitchers cards on defense wins...
