70s Mystery Game.

Maybe HAL was weary from participating in a 16 inning game, but take a look at this play by play.

My team is at bat in the bottom of the 16th inning after the opposing team has scored twice in the top of the inning. The first batter, Jim Sundberg, draws a base on balls, and then the pitcher's spot (Jerry Augustine) comes up.

Augustine has weakened to an F2 after allowing the two runs in the top of the inning, so HAL brings up pitcher Ken Brett as a pitch hitter. Ken Brett has an 8 hitting rating, and my team is behind my two runs, and what does HAL do? He has Brett lay down a sacrifice bunt. Since both players had a C bunt rating, Augustine could have remained in the game and bunted.

In my opinion, being behind by two runs, it seems that you would not want to intentionally make an out, especially when you have an 8 hitting pitcher at bat.

It would be nice if the hitter prefs included the good hitting pitchers so that you could instruct HAL Don't Sac Bunt!!

I remember once that Ed Armbrister was up in an obvious bunting situation. After the first strike, Sparky Anderson pulled Armbrister for a pinch hitter (I don't remember who). Then the infield moved back and the pinch hitter successfully bunted. After the game, Sparky explained that the other team was playing the bunt because Armbrister was a weak hitter expected to bunt. We can imagine that HAL used Sparky's logic here.
