Double A Minor League Baseball: 80s Style ONLY 4 SPOTS LEFT

PostSat Jul 30, 2016 5:36 pm

***Please read the entire thread to find out about the possible 1-round SP Supplemental Draft option***

For those who like to find the values…
For those who would like to see some very unfamiliar names on the league leader boards…
For those who would like to submit a draft card using a different rubric…
For those who enjoy solving challenges in austere environments…

$60M/DH/10% FA

Select your team under the following conditions:

-All players must have a salary which is 2.99M or LESS
-Players with salaries of 3M or greater are NOT ELIGIBLE for rosters
-Choose any stadium for your team

Contingencies:

If HAL Auto-Drafts a player with salary 3M or above, that player must be dropped before Opening Day.
You may replace that player as needed with a player with salary 2.99M or LESS in order to stay within the standard SOM roster requirements.

The 80s Mystery is already a limited player set, so here are the relevant stats:

-There are 210 Hitters Cards which qualify as 2.99M or less: this yields approx. 17 per team
-There are 39 Catcher Cards which qualify as 2.99M or less: this yields approx. 3 per team
-There are 150 Pitcher Cards which qualify as 2.99M or less: this yields approx. 12 per team
-There are 65 Starting Pitcher Cards which qualify as 2.99M or less: this yields approx. 5 per team

Any Questions? Send a PM to Golden Bubba via the Discussion Forum or reply directly to this thread

**Please read below about the possible 1 Round Supplemental SP draft and how to trigger it into effect.**

Many thanks and best of luck with the virtual dice!

Awesome!

This is my first attempt at setting up a Theme League. Thank you for for setting up the reservation queue. The league has already been set up and posted and I just advertised in the current leagues that I am in.

In order to prevent getting snubbed from the contest, feel free to set your draft card and enter before the league gets filled with casual players who are not reserving spots via the message board.

Again, many thanks. I look forward to seeing Pete Incaviliglia on the HR Leaderboard!

Just a comment from an outsider...

I don't think 65 starters is enough to go around. You might consider bumping up the $2.99 limit on starters only to $3.50. That would add 10 starters, thus allowing each team to have six (with three to spare for the league). You might even then consider capping the number of starters allowed at six.

Agreed, it would not be enough to go around if each manager employed an appropriate "mystery" strategy of carrying 6 or 7 SP's to make a a solid 4 or 5 man rotation. The monkey math of it shows that each team will have 5 SPs and approx. 5 teams will have the luxury of carrying a 6th SP. The severe deficit on SP availability was actually something that I was going for. This is part of the reason why I chose the 80s Mystery at such a debilitating salary cap per player.

As a manager who prefers to have 6 or 7 SPs when playing Daily or Mystery, in order to field the Best 4 or 5 SP rotation, I will find myself having to use a rubric which takes me "out of my comfort zone" when it comes to assembling and managing this team. If a manager is the ATG type who prefers a minimum number of players and just uses his "starters" without tinkering with the roster, then this league will be familiar territory for him/her, with the caveat that some of those starters will be absolutely horrid from a purist's point of view. This league will place an undue premium on team construction in all phases (draft card/waivers/mid-season) not found in leagues with many options to choose from.

Additionally, when the season gets going and mystery cards begin to reveal themselves via Injuries/HBP/Triples/etc, the question of how to handle a "problem child" in the rotation will separate the better managers from their competition. In most leagues, the remedy is simple…drop the "bad" player and choose from many options to replace him with a "better" player. That would not be a viable option to handle such a situation in this league, for the reasons which you accurately pointed out.

It is definitely a High Risk/High Reward Boom or Bust type scenario with regards to SPs. I, myself, am not too familiar with that type of environment, so the potential exists for this to be a very frustrating, growing-pains scenario for myself.

I have thought of a few contingencies in the event that more SPs need to be made available for the league and I would like to implement your suggestions should they become needed. Ideally, if each manager is coveting the higher priced SPs, then HAL will distribute the lower priced according to "inner-workings of the black box", and that should prove sufficient to avoid a $9M SP getting drafted. So the SPs distribution will become somewhat randomized for 80% of the SPs. As they say in the Marine Corps, "Semper Gumby!" It's time to take the lemons we have been given and make some lemonade.

Would a contrarian strategy of populating a draft card with 5 mid-priced SPs provide an advantage? Most likely, maybe…but then again, maybe not.

In all seriousness, I DO need to formulate a contingency plan in the event that this experiment does go awry. Thank you for prompting me to consider all of this, I will announce such a plan shortly so that all managers are on the same page when drafting their team. It will most likely involve the Waiver Order (that is a good measure of which managers got "screwed" the most) and a select cadre of 12 SPs who would normally fall outside of the $2.99M or less range. For the sake of clarity and transparency, I will also spell out the specific "trigger conditions" that would cause the league to include this extra cadre of SPs.

(Apologies for the novel)

Good Luck to all and especially, Moose Haas, in his bid for the Cy Young Award!

Awesome Fench and RonSanto, thanks for joining!

As for the potential issue with the razor-thin margin of error with the SPs, if the following conditions occur:

1. If, during the Auto-Draft, HAL drafts a SP or SP/RP with a salary greater than $2.99M on behalf of 7 OUT OF 12 teams (simple majority)

The league will implement the following AMENDMENT:

I. Each team will have the option to exercise exclusive rights to 1 of the 16 SPs with a salary greater than $2.99M but no greater than $3.59M. (John Henry Johnson $3.58M is the 16th such SP eligible for this supplemental draft).

II. Supplemental SP draft will occur after the Auto-Draft via the league messaging.

III. The order of the Supplemental draft will be determined by the Waiver order.

IV. No need to use a waiver pick to draft your supplemental SP- He will be yours once you declare your choice. you can pick him up After waivers without challenge or competition.

V. Once all Supplemental SPs are declared, the 4 remaining Supplemental SPs are NOT eligible for league play. Once you make your selection, he will be yours and yours only, unless you drop him or trade him. If you drop him, you will be able to pick him back up at a later point, but he cannot be picked up by another team.

N.B.

-HAL may end up Auto-Drafting a SP with salary greater than $2.99 for several reasons:

A. When making selections, HAL selects the next best Lower-Priced option in place of the player you requested. If there are no more $.75M options available, HAL will revert to the top of the salary list to supply a draft choice. (HALs Black Box Happenstance)

B. The manager INTENTIONALLY chooses to draft a SP greater than $2.99M. If you choose to do this, it will be construed as a vote of "Yea" to adopt the Supplemental draft amendment. This is allowed and encouraged if you want the amendment. (A Vote for the Supplemental Draft)

C. Do NOT submit your target supplemental SP on your draft card…the order of the supplemental draft will be determined by the Waiver Order and will be handled AFTER the Auto-draft.

-There is a minor hidden cost associated with voting for the amendment. If you use a pick to grab a SP greater than $2.99M, that is essentially 1 less draft choice that you have compared to those who have not chosen to vote for the amendment.

-Fench and RonSanto, feel free to change your draft submission to reflect if you would like to vote for the Supplemental Draft Amendment or leave it as it is.

-I will revise the league description to describe the Supplemental SP Contingency and how a manager can contribute (vote) to trigger it.

Apologies if this appears convoluted or too lawyerly…let me know if you have any questions for clarification.

Best regards, and good luck to Jody Davis as he makes a run for the Golden Glove Award!

Also,

Many thanks to Coyote for lending his experience and wisdom to anticipate any potential hang-ups and prevent a potential clown show debut in my first attempt at a theme league.

Are you concerned that people may see an 80s 60M league out there and not realize the salary restrictions as drawn up in this thread and put players with higher salaries on their AD card which would ultimately screw them if they then have to pick from the scraps that are left or refuse to drop those players which would screw the rest of the league? Leaving this league open to the public without a password could result in this happening.
