The Pirates team may need to put RP high on their AD list.

But I think part of the answer here is that we have to draft to enable a full SOM-legal team to be fielded, right? We cannot count on a special rule bailout. :) In other words if that scenario played out I think the owner would have to draft a different half team, right?

I am still amazed that Franky apparently has email now! :P Good to be playing with you again, Franky!

I think it would be helpful to know that rule before making our half team pick. For example, the rule could be that, by opening day, the team must take the worst free agent pitcher (or hitter) available as measured by ERA (or BA). In that case, there can't be any argument whether a special rule is fair or not.

PS Dan, it is great to be playing with you again. I think we have to consider the situation if the Pirates don't put pure relievers high enough on their list. I don't want to appear too cut-throat, but if the rule is that the Pirates must trade for enough pure relievers, then I put Shantz or Wood high up on my list and try to force Pittsburgh to trade me Clemente for them. Any rule is fine by me, I would just like to know so I can draft accordingly.

You won't know if you have enough players till after the AD for sure. Using the Pirates and RP only players for example...they have one RP only that they know they will get in Roy Face who they own all 5 of his cards. They have the opportunity for 3 others (Schantz, Wood & Mikkelsen) If whatever other teams that also have access to Schantz, Wood & Mikkelsen place them higher on their AD card than Pittsburgh does then Pitt could be short on RP only players. It would be up to the Pitt manager to make sure he has enough RP only players either through his half team selection or in trading. DO NOT just sit back and expect to be appointed a player by the commish.

Here's the problem, the current plan leaves too much discretion in the hands of the commissioner. So, if it is me that is a player short, then the penalty will be really high, but it is somebody else, the commish will just award them a decent player. I remember I was once in a 69 theme league and there were 2 stadiums left in the final round and I could pick either one, but because the player picking after me could only pick one of the stadiums, I was forced into a stadium that didn't suit my team. Now, in that case, there was nothing in the rules to stop me from picking my preferred stadium, but I was forced to do it so the league format would be maintained. Another time, we were drafting players in the second round and I wasn't picking that promptly, but a lot of other owners were taking a long time and everyody got their turn; but not me, noooo, the next owner skipped over me and picked Willie Stargell, and I jumped back in but the best player available was Mike Hegan. So, there was some arbitrary ambiguity in the rules and I ended up with Mike Hegan instead of Stargell. Mike Hegan! So, basically, that's the problem, everyone is out to get me and in the end I wind up drafting Mike Hegan.

Chumming the water for trades

PostWed Aug 07, 2013 4:10 pm

I am sure that trading is not allowed until after the final 1/2 team pick, but just to get the juices flowing. The Tigers have an exceptional amount of exclusive talent to be had (all 5 years carded to Detroit), including:

Kaline, Al rf-1(-4)e5 / cf-2e5 9,160,000
Cash, Norm 1b-3e8 7,530,000
Freehan, Bill c-2(-2)e3,T-5(pb-3) / 1b-4e12 6,230,000
Northrup, Jim rf-2(-1)e7 / cf-3e7 / lf-2e7 5,080,000
Horton, Willie lf-4(-2)e6 / rf-4e6 5,070,000
Wert, Don 3b-2e12 / ss-4e28 4,120,000
McAuliffe, Dick ss-3e36 / 2b-3e26 / 3b-3e33 4,100,000
Stanley, Mickey cf-1(-1)e4 / 1b-3e20 1,370,000
McLain, Denny S8* 6,700,000
Lary, Frank S8*/R3 5,660,000
Lolich, Mickey S7*/R3 4,960,000
Mossi, Don S7/R3 3,690,000
Aguirre, Hank S7/R3 3,680,000
Hiller, John R3 3,330,000
Fox, Terry R3 3,130,000
Foytack, Paul S7/R3 1,030,000

Why run the risk of 2nd and 3rd tier players in the AD, lock up some great talent NOW (I mean when the commish says GO to trading)!

Sincerely, Sparky Latorre
