.....comeback and win division or wildcard?

League I'm in just hit the 81 game halfway point and I'm looking for reasons to remain optimistic. My team is 16GB at 32-49 (14Gb of the wildcard) in 4th place and continues to lose more than win. Team has 5 superstars (George Brett, Robin Yount, Kirby Puckett, Steve Carlton, and Dan Quisenberry) who all seem to be in decent years, but ......disappointingly are not producing many wins.

Anyone ever come back from 16GB or more to win the division or wildcard?

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/815987

George Brett .294 13HR
Robin Yount .274 8HR
Kirby Puckett .281 9HR
Steve Carlton 7-4 3.79 1.01
Dan Quisenberry 1-7 19saves 2.77 1.18

With this player combo along with several others who are playing well, combined with a 3 game win sweep last night I'm thinking they can rally to at least make a charge for the playoffs. Or is that unrealistic? :?: :?: :?:

In one recently completed 80s league I was 55-47 through 102 games and 16 games out of first place.
After game 117, I was 65-52 and still 15 games out of first.

Thanks to a 3 game sweep of the team I was chasing all season long in the last series I finished the season 101-61 and won the division by a game. Ended up winning the championship.

It's highly unlikely but it's not impossible.

I remember once I had a 14 game lead over one of Jimmy C's teams with just 2 weeks to go and he overtook me. I've never gotten over it. :)

I was once 13 back with 21 to play. Won 20 out of 21 to miss the div and wildcard by one game... The game I lost I blew at 4 run lead in the ninth.... So it can happen..... I think I won like 17 straight or something like that.... it is strat so you never know......

This is good news. Right now I'm 18 back at 36-57 and have won 4 of last 6, so the fans in Royals have hope. :)

The biggest difference between your situation and probably all the others from the previous posts is that you are currently in 4th place, so you have 3 teams to pass, and winning the wild card will be very difficult with the logjam of good teams in the central.
Your pitching is solid overall with some good starters (possibly inflated numbers due to the home stadium) and a moderate bullpen, but your offense is anemic.
Guys like Boone, White, Shelby, Armas, and Wilson aren't scaring me (regardless of stadium) and your good players like Brett, Yount and Puckett are underperforming, but that also could be due to the stadium.
Unfortunately we're at the point in the season where it's going to be very difficult to find any significant improvements, so I'm not suggesting a blow up of the entire roster.

Not going to say a comeback is impossible, but a little extra luck will be needed.

Thanks for the feedback. Team looks like it might be in the spoiler role for the rest of the year. Won 2 of 3 from 1st place team last night.

One of the biggest mistakes I probably made was not picking up Al Cowens as originally planned!

I had Cowens on my team already, I'm pretty sure it's his 82 card.

How were you able to identify the probable year so quickly? He only had 3 games, 13 AB, and was never injured or HBP.

This is my 5th team and I'm noticing that some teams are able to identify what player they have very quickly (under 50 AB or 20 IP or less) and make a drop/add to improve. I'm still trying to figure out how to accurately do that.

Because HAL bat him between George Bell (85 or 86//favoring 85 but not sure) and Buddy Bell (86) against righties and behind Bill Doran (85 or 87//favoring 87) against lefties.

So offensively, he needs to be better than Buddy Bell and worse than George Bell frs Righties and he needs to be worse than Bill Doran vrs lefties.

I'm not 100% sold on it, but his 82 card is the closest fit to that setup.
