Why was U.L. Washington inserted in the game at SS as a defensive replacement for Alan Trammell who is a 1? What am I missing?

I want to know as well. I've seen that happen in some of my games too and I just tell myself there's more important things in the world to get upset about BUT I still want that fixed! ha

Looks like HAL's such a genius that he knew he'd need Milt May to come up and single in the tying run in the 9th before UL could make the last out. Brilliant.

Thanks, guys I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. May did single didn't he and lately my teams have been very lucky, so I am not complaining. I love the mystery format. ... I wonder if Trammell maybe got hurt, but only for the rest of the game?? I am relatively new to this format.... I am in two leagues, this 80s league and a 70s league and a long long time ago I played in one of each of the same decades but I had no idea what I was doing. It takes some adjusting to the small player pool, when you are used to the 4000 cards you can choose from in the latest ATG and even the 200X leagues have a nice size player pool.

If there was an injury it would say in the game box score that the player was injured for the rest of the game.
Its a very interesting situation and lucky for you that it worked out.
I have some theories about the setting for pinch hitters and pinch runners but still its impossible to explain.

Washington actually pinch hit for Mike Scossia - then Bill May was brought into catch and Washington moved over to shortstop and stayed in the game. Washington wasn't brough in as a defensive sub for Trammel directly. The box score reflects it kind of fuzzy though but thats what happened.
It's still a bad move- if they really wanted Washington to pinch hit for Scossia then they should have just did that , bring May into catch - and leave Trammel in the game.

I had another incident last night. Again U.L. Washington pinch hit for Mike Sciossa and again Washington stayed in the game and took over for Alan Trammell at SS and Milt May went in for Sciossa. Maybe Hal does not like using pinch hitters unless they remain in the game, which doesn't make sense. .... I want to stress the point that I am NOT COMPLAINING so much as trying to understand. I can hardly complain with the luck I have been having recently. But maybe there is something I could do differently. I have Trammell checked for don't remove and don't sub for defensively. Maybe U.L. is on his best card and Trammell on his worst card??? Either way, I am very happy with the Mystery Game, I love it. Once you play the Mystery Game it just seems like it would be hard to go back to normal play.

Despite my earlier silly comment, I agree this is tough to figure out. Do you have UL listed as one of your defensive subs on the team strategy page? As you say, maybe HAL just has a bias in favor of keeping pinch hitters in the game. Maybe he treats a pinch hit appearance like a double-switch.

Washington didn't come in as a defensive replacement. He cam in as a pinch-hitter for Scioscia against a lefty pitcher. It might mean that you got Washington's 82 card - where he's stronger against lefties. It could also mean that Washington's 82 card is better than Trammel's worst card.
Keep looking at the clues and eventually you'll figure which cards you've got and why Hal is making the moves.
