A Team of Destiny

I just won a 60s championship with an 83-win team, and I still can’t believe they won. Here’s what they had to do:

Regular Season: The PriusC Road Warriors started the season strong, but they soon faded. They were in third place for most of the year. They entered the final series with three teams in contention, and they needed to win two games to have a chance to move into first place for the first time since early in the season. They promptly lost game 160. We won game 161, but we were down 5-3 going into the 9th inning in the final game. We scraped up two runs, then traded runs in the 11th, and ultimately won in the 13th inning. Thus, the Road Warriors finally moved into first place on game 162--and then it took a tie-breaker to do it (not to mention the last place team winning two games against the third team in contention).

Semi-Finals: I beat a 93-win team in seven games. The team I defeated was the only one that had better pitching than my own in the regular season.

Finals: I lost the first two games in the series and was quickly down three games to one. My team faced Sandy Koufax in game 5. My team went on a rare hitting tear and picked up 10 runs, winning 10-3. We then went on the road to win game 6. In game 7, we scored 3 runs in the top of the eighth inning to take the lead 4-2. My closer gave up three singles and a run in the bottom of the ninth to make it exciting, but we held on for the win and championship.

It wasn't like your team was stacked with #1 cards either. You made due with a lot of #2's, 3's and 4's. And you had a regular season team .311 OBP...YIKES!

That right there is just great managing....Congrats.

Thanks, Jim.

I knew Sievers, Runnels, and Herzog didn't have their best cards, but I also knew they were good cards I was more than happy to keep. I like players like that, who have four or even five good seasons. Triandos was the same. I was able to eliminate his one bad card, and his other seasons were very close.

The funny thing is the guy who carried my team offensively, Hank Aaron, had his #1 card. Yet, he is someone I didn't autodraft. My initial draft went so poorly that I had first waiver pick, and Aaron was the best available. So, much of my success was pure luck!

I had a 1970s team recently and initially I was real upset with my auto draft but I just got extremely lucky as my team won 108 regular season games and the championship. But honestly a lot of luck was involved. I did not draft Carl Yastremzski but he did well. I held on to Fisk even though his OPS was under .700 for most of the year. I got lucky and it paid off.

Congratulations again Coyote. Hank Aaron had one heck of a year and it looks like you pulled all the right strings. You have to be good to fix a team that is not what you were trying for in the auto draft. That is why I am so excited for the live drafting feature!

One thing I love about your team is you had a great regular season and won the championship. I just can't seem to put the two together. My chances in the playoffs seem to be inversely proportional to the number of wins my team has.
