Epic Mystery Tour Championship Series

Sadly, I was on the losing end of this one. My wild-card Soweto Uprisings (86-76) ended up in the Finals against my division's winner, the Manhattan Sandmen of AdamKatz (92-70).

Home team won all 7 games: his 4 in Veteran's, my 3 in Cleveland Municipal. Mostly close contests: I won a 7-0 Jim McGlothlin gem, then took a 3-2 lead after winning Game 5 by a 7-6 score, with a 2-out, 2-run winning single from Willie Randolph in bottom of the 9th. The Sandmen definitely caught me napping in Game 6 with an 18-4 shellacking.

Game 7 went 12 innings, and then Otto "The Puerto Rican with a German First Name" Velez broke Soweto's hearts with a series-winner in the bottom of the 12th... upon which I immediately banned Wayne Twitchell from ever being on any of my teams again. ;)

Great season for me, better season for AdamKatz, and honestly good competition from all 12 managers. Congrats to all.

Anyone else have a truly epic Mystery Tournament Championship Series?

There is hope for many of you in the hunt for the Final 12 in the mystery tourney. Here is the story of my collapse in the last mystery tourney in 2010.

9 games to play, up 4 games in my division on Hailedog. The bonus for making the playoffs will get one of us in the final 12 and the other will be left out. I have the 1986 Clemens pitching twice, the 1984 Stieb and the 1984 Blyleven pitching 3 times each. I didn't look at all of his pitchers again by in the last 3 game series, my big 3 faced Walk, Denny, and Youmans for Hailedog. I went 2-8 in my last 10 games while Hailedog went 7-3 to win the division by one game. He makes the Final 12 and the rest is history, he wins that tournament and is the champion. Who will be this series come from behind story?

By the way, what ever happened to Hailedog - is he under a different name?

Good luck everyone.

I was in the 70s league the Conndor is talking about and was leading both he and Adam's division until the last 2 weeks of the season, when my guys decided to go 8-19, give up the division title and skip the playoffs entirely. http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/schedule/1120209. Meanwhile, my 80s team has gone 12-21 over its last 33, http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/index.php/team/frontoffice, and now the 90s team appears to be following suit (8-13 this week). http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/index.php/team/frontoffice. I've dropped like a stone down the leader board and the spot I thought I had in the top 12 is now anyone's for the taking (particularly the gleeful guy above = ) http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/tournament/18. God I just love a good collapse.

PS. Where's Greg Norman????

Ahh, so now I know who to blame for me losing to Hailedog in the finals of that tournament.

I'll also take partial credit for Hailedog's championship. I had by far (13 games ahead of any other team) the best team in the league with over 100 wins in the champions league, and then one of my best player (Grich) gets hurt for a lot of games in the final series of the season (of course, I didn't rest him). Hailedog then beats me 3-1 in the semis even though I finished almost 20 games ahead of him during the regular season.

I was unable to sign up for this Mystery Tournament because of time and financial constraints but I did volunteer to act as a filler/ alternate for one of the 1980s Tournament leagues. I finished with the best record in the league and won my division on the final game of the season. The playoffs start Monday. Of course this leaves me wondering, what if I had been able to play in all four events. .... Though I do not have any experience with the 1960s, and very little experience with non DH leagues (on-line)... Good luck to all the fellas who make the final league. Next time there is an event like this I will be sure to sign up for the whole tournament.

That was a good series and good season.

I got unlucky early with Reggie Smith and Joe Ferguson's worst years. Competitive league so there wasnt alot of action on the free agent line. I got very lucky getting Velez and Torres' best years. No HAL cheating made it difficult to be sure I wasnt just getting good rolls but eventually it was clear. Went through most of the season cycling through bad pitchers (luckily had Maricial's great year to help every 4th game). By the end of the year I had a great Wood too. Very necessary to counteract the Uprising's Gibson.

Weirdest year reveal was having Hebner's year while sitting on Parrish's good year. Hebner ph against a righty in the first series of the year and did extremely well the first few weeks so I dismissed his performance over the rest of the season. Cant believe I had a 691 1L OPS guy batting 5th the whole season....
