60's Sleepers and Keepers

Here are a few guys who have done well for me and have outperformed their price in the 60's.

Catchers:
McCarver and Berra
Both guys are cheap and have some good years on their cards for the price and they have (0) arms which in this game isn't so bad as most teams are reluctant to steal bases. The higher priced catchers are no safe bet and there are a few in the 4-6M range that are pure crap: Romano, Lollar, Dietz, etc.
•Grote is a good dark horse if you are looking for the cheap play.

1B:
Here is where you have to spend your money. I love McCovey (except for that injury racked '61 card) and Cepeda. I prefer to use Killebrew and D Allen at 3B.

2B:
Carew, Gilliam and Fox
Carew can be awesome and I've gotten some good OBP years out of Gilliam whom you can use at 3B also.
Causey and T Taylor are long shot options when you are short on cash.

SS:
Groat is hands down the best 1.5M shortshop on this site. Defense is poor so match him up with a defensive minded backup (Brinkman).

3B:
I usually try to get D Allen here or Brooks or Mathews. Not into Santo or Bando much.

OF:
Like 1st and 3rd you need to spend out here. I like the guys with consistent output like Reggie Smith or Felipe Alou. Mantle and Mays (and Yaz and Maris, etc) have the best cards available but 60% of the time they wont earn their price. Want to roll the dice? Try Rico Carty instead.

SP:
These are obvious, the same guys are always in the Free Agent pool. Love me some Fergie Jenkins though.

RP:
Hoyt Wilhelm costs 5.76 M and is worth every penny.
Joe Hoerner my second fave.
Under 1M guys are Lindblad, Knowles, Lyle and Upshaw.

Now go get these guys but stay out of leagues I am in!

G Money,

Good post. You are right on with your thoughts on the sleepers. I think good sleepers for the money are Carew, T. Davis,
M. Mota, M.Alou. .300 hitters at a great salary. Good luck in the future.

I guess it's part of the charm of the mystery game, but several of your sleepers have been nothing but dogs for me, including Gilliam, Groat and Jenkins.

Berra's great, but you better keep 3 catchers on your roster because he'll be injured 1/2 of the time. Carty has always put up numbers for me.

I think much of the key is tailoring the team to your stadium, but I've had some luck with lower priced options like Sawatski, Versalles, Robin Roberts and Upshaw,
