Help with drafting in mystery leagues

PostTue Jan 06, 2015 7:32 pm

I'm new to mystery leagues and am wondering how people draft in them as compared to non-mystery leagues. My first inclination was to look for players with more consistency among years, like the '60 's Killebrew, so I'll know (more or less) what I'm getting. Then I decided to seek players with dramatically different years, like the 60 's Blue Moon Odom, hoping I can figure out if the card represents a good year (or not) and get more bang for my buck.

I can't find much on this on the boards. If there's something somewhere please point me towards it. Thanks!

Hey JoeBob...I'll try to shed some light on how I draft, but bear in mind I'm a notoriously poor auto-drafter. I'll usually only get 10-14 of the players I draft. I usually draft for my stadium. If I'm going to play in a pitchers park I'll look for good defense (especially a 1-range shortstop), speed, good outfield arms, and high OBP players. If I'm in a hitters park I want raw power more than anything else...Lot's of big, un-shaven, ugly, ball-smashers.

But the draft is just one aspect of the game. There are as many ways to draft probably as there are managers. The key to winning isn't necessarily the draft results. It is more important to identify the good cards from the bad and making the necessary moves during the season. Any stadium will be kind to a team where 15 or more of the players are on their best or second best card. Like I said earlier, I don't auto-draft very well. But...I do win my share of championships.

Thanks Jimmy. Maybe drafting in mystery leagues isn't necessarily all that different from the non-mystery leagues. Glad it's possible to draft poorly (I certainly have in non-mystery leagues) and, by making the right in-season moves, succeed.
