Favorite decade ?

PostSat Nov 07, 2015 8:41 pm

Which is your favorite decade to play,.. and why? Which is your least favorite decade, and why? What are some differences you have noticed between the decades?

For instance, I noticed there are a lot of guys in the 1990s that can only play one or two positions, compared to the other sets....

I like all the decades, with the 1960s being my least favorite, since it was well before my time...

I like the 1980s a lot but I might be burned out on that decade a little...

1960's. All you need is a decent Don Demeter and Gary Peters and you're a postseason contender.

I prefer the 1990,s followed by the 60's and 70's and lastly the 80's.

I like the 90's because I can always put together a team I like no matter how the draft went. To a lesser degree the 60's and 70's allow me to have a roster I am ok with. Screw up in the draft in the 80's and my chances are toast.

I like the 70s the best, perhaps because that was when I was a kid. But I like the player set (even though Strat should re-do some cards with years they left out) and it seems like there are more diverse ways to build a team. The 90s would be next favorite with a good player pool. Only negative of the 90s is the 'lottery' nature of some of the cheap players - 1 great year based on 112 ABs. The 80s are third and it really is due to the small player pool Strat created. Lastly the 60s, I just haven't warmed up to that decade and I probably should try another season.

The 90s is my least favorite. I suppose because there are quite a few low priced one year wonder players and it seems like it is mainly a HR contest.

The 60s and 70s are my favorites in no particular order. The 80s would be tied for first as well but the player pool is too small and the player salaries are not in line with the other games.

Many players of the 60s game I was not all that familiar with as that was just before my time but that doesn't bother me. SOM is SOM no matter if you have ever watched the players or not. ATG is SOM's most popular game and not too many of us ever watched the players prior to the 60s play.

Thanks guys you bring up a lot of good points, like why are the player pools so small, particularly with the 1980s? They really could have included a lot more players. Anyone with three years in the decade should be fair game.

They could have included more players in the 1960s as well. I feel like that is the decade that can be difficult if you do not have a good draft. Not much at SS and a few other positions. They could have added so many more players. For instance, why not Nolan Ryan? I know he only played 2 or 3 seasons in the 60s BUT they could have used two of his 1970s cards....

By the way, there is a 1970s League (Standard Options) that only needs five more to draft. And once these leagues go above the half full mark they can fill pretty quickly. Let's see if we can fill this thing today! Thanks much, happy gaming!

By the way, that 1970s League needs just two to fill! Come on ice cream!

To me a player in a certain decade game should have at least 3 viable card years within that decade plus one or two in the decade before or after. Nolan Ryan only has two viable years in the 60s but SOM has included players with only two years in the decade before so he wouldn't be the first. Actually SOM did a pretty good job of including most everyone with at least 3 viable years in the 60s game with only about a dozen exceptions. The only important one they really missed is Don Kessinger. There is no reason to leave him out as he had 5 viable years in the 60s and SS is a very thin position in that game so he would have been very welcome.

Have any players been left out of any of the other decades that should not have been?

The 80's are missing at least 100 players. The 70's may be missing 25-30. I haven't checked the 90's.

These estimations are only using players with enough AB/IP to have a viable carded season in the decade. Other people may be happy with only 2 such seasons and if so the numbers would be higher.
