Steve,
There are many strategies to win. Each decade has its own challenges. The 60s and 70s are more small ball oriented than the slugging 80s and 90s.
Some basic ways to build a team is to pick a position or two to go cheap on. Middle infield and catcher are where do it. For many reasons the high priced pitchers disappoint so I tend not to go for the Seavers and Clemons.
In the 60s and 70s you need a solid bullpen, in the 80s not so much.
It is harder to play in play in unbalanced park because you never know what you're going to get for cards.
My suggestion is to look at winning teams in your league and see what is working.
Another key thing is to not to give up on players too so. Give hitters 100at bats and starting pitchers 50 innings or so.
Post links to your teams and ask for opinions, people love to analyze teams and offer suggestions

Ok will do. My 70's team started horrible but have climbed back to respectability . I think I have the best C Moore so thinking about dumping Sanguillen to improve elsewhere.

Steve, read the 1st post by visick in the thread at the top of this message board entitled "Help w/ reading the cards.." Also, see my post a few down from visick's. That will give you all the info you need to be competitive.

Your 70s team looks OK. You could dump Hassler if you need cash. See how Garner does, but I am not a fan of his.
You have too many dollar in RP on your 80s team. You only need one of the guys over 2 million. Get .75m guys and upgrade at 1b and SP. Show is not great, try guys like Welsh, Black, Browning, Martinez, Bannister, etc. You have some good core players in Butler, Gibson, Randolph, Parker, Ozzie and Molitor. I think your pitching is out of sorts.

Good advice already given. In the 70s it's rare that I carry 10 pitchers in a DH league, let alone 11. I would drop Hassler and/or McCLure. Hal Lanier is overly redundant to Metzger who doesn't get hurt. Since Moore seems to be on a good year I would get a '2' defensive sub for him..

Do you prefer Johnson to Garner? I hate to play a 3 at 2b. As for Lanier, I don't know who I'd get as he backs up 2b and is cheap. I did dump Hassler to free up some cash

On 80's team , I have the 81 Hargrove. Seems like a good card for the money?

See what Garner does.
