New League: Determine the best team of the 70s
Posted: Sat Mar 09, 2019 4:06 pm
Which franchise had the best decade during the 70s? The Big Red Machine with multiple Hall of Famers? The 3 time champion Oakland Athletics? Maybe you prefer offense and the Lumber Company--the Pittsburgh Pirates get your vote. Prefer pitching? Maybe it's the Los Angeles Dodgers? The Baltimore Orioles who combine outstanding pitching with stellar defense? But no team is without flaws. In this league, don't expect to see players dropped after 12 games——the only players available to you are the players assigned to the team you select.
Based on research at Baseball Reference, players were assigned to the team they played with the most from 1970 through 1979. Some minor adjustments were made to ensure each team would have a backup catcher/backup infielders. Here are the rules of the league
Salary Cap: $140 million--
Waivers or Frenzy: Frenzy since you will control all players on the team you select.
DH: This league will use the DH
Team name: Please use the name of the team you select
Ballpark: Please select the ballpark of the team you choose-if you pick the Pittsburgh Pirates, you would choose Three Rivers Stadium.
Trades: Allowed--no restrictions--you control the players so feel free to trade to improve your team.
Roster size: No restrictions beyond normal Strat rules
Players not listed on the roster of the 12 teams selected are not eligible for this league. The only players available to you are the players assigned to the team you select.
After sign up, we will run a randomizer to determine the draft order. The first 4 teams will comprise the East, the next 4 will form the Central division while the remaining 4 teams will form the West.
The teams that can be selected all have between 28 and 37 players on their rosters.
All teams have the players necessary to comply with roster rules—2 back up catchers, 3 pitchers rated as “RP only” and, 5 pitchers who can start. In some cases, the backups may not be ideal.
There were three player assignments which warrant highlighting:
Julio Cruz was assigned to the Minnesota Twins.
Otto Valez was assigned to the Kansas City Royals
Luis Aparicio was assigned to the Atlanta Braves
The rosters were all reviewed to ensure accuracy——however, please alert me immediately of any issues you encounter. Remember, the only players available to you are the players assigned to the team you select.
I have an Excel sheet which details the player/team assignments. Please send me a private message with your e-mail address and I’ll provide you the official roster sheet.
The Commissioner reserves the right to correct any identified issues with the rosters as published.
