I've always felt that Buckner got a bad rap because of that error. While it did allow the Mets to win, making the play would have just made the game go additional innings.

I have seen shows on that play and the "Bartman" incident and both point out that while those drew all the attention there were many other mistakes that caused those losses. Either before or after those plays.
Bill was a exceptional baseball player.

over 2700 hits has better stats than a number of hall of famers definitely got a bad rap for 1 play

Regarding Game 6 of the '86 World Series, I have felt that if Dick Williams or Tommy Lasorda had been managing the Red Sox instead of John McNamara, they would not have hesitated to bring in Bruce Hurst in a relief role in the bottom of the 11th inning, especially after the Gary Carter single and the tying run at the plate. Hurst had already chalked up 2 wins against the Mets and was on the verge of being named the World Series MVP had the Bosox won that game and the Series. A Hurst save in Game 6 of the World Series to add to the two wins would have been an impressive feat.
