Have you ever wondered how some of the lesser used players would perform if used? Would you welcome the opportunity to help craft the roster of your division mates? Would you like the challenge of managing players rarely used and adapting your strategy accordingly? If so, this league is for you.
After a traditional auto draft, you will have an opportunity to employ a strategy to make life much more challenging for your division rivals. There will be a three round draft via the message board but with a twist. The players drafted during this draft will become part of the roster for one of the 3 other teams in your division. You will assign one player to each of your three division mates and will receive a 3 players drafted by your division mates and assigned to you. The draft will consist of 3 rounds---round 1 will be for pitchers, round 2 for hitters and round 3 can be either a pitcher or a hitter.
An Excel sheet details the draft regarding which team you will be drafting and teams drafting players for you will be shared once the league is full/autodraft is completed---
• In the first round, teams will be selecting a pitcher for one of their division mates.
• In the second round, teams will be drafting a hitter for one of the other teams in your division
• In the final round, either a pitcher or hitter can be selected for the remaining team in your division.
The players assigned to your team cannot be released and must be played---there are minimum requirements regarding plate appearances and innings pitched—the specific rules are described below.
General rules:
• Player set: 2000s
• DH: Yes
• Salary Cap: $80 million
• Roster Restrictions, Drop Penalties: Standard SOM rules
• Draft: Auto draft except for 3 players will be assigned to your team—details below
• Division assignment—Random via SOM
• Ballpark: No restrictions-any can be chosen
• Draft order-established via randomizer and will be a “snake” style.
The season will start 4 days after the auto draft so it’s important that you be available for the 3 round draft after the auto draft/before the season starts.
Players assigned to your team must
• Remain on your roster all season—even after they satisfied the minimum usage requirement
• For hitters, they must achieve the 5 year average for plate appearances (Hit By Pitch counts toward plate appearances)
• For starting pitchers, achieve the average number of starts plus 90% of average of innings pitched.
• For relief pitchers, achieve the average number of innings pitched for the pitcher.
Examples:
You are assigned Lyle Overby by one of your division mates via the three round draft. Lyle must remain on your roster for the entire season. Lyle needs to get at least 568 plate appearances during the season.
You are assigned Brad Radke by your division mate via the three round draft. Brad must start at least 33 games and achieve at least 195 innings
You are assigned Huston Street by your division mate via the three round draft. Huston must pitch at least 66 innings.
Here’s an example on how the draft will work –for example, if the four teams in one division are
Mets
Braves
Marlins
Nationals
Round 1: The Mets will pick a pitcher---that player will become a proud member of the Nationals.
Round 2: The Mets will pick a hitter—that player will become a proud member of the Braves.
Round 3: The Mets will pick either a pitcher or a hitter---they will become a member of the Marlins.
Round 1: The Marlins will pick a pitcher who will becomes a member of the Mets
Round 2: The Braves will pick a hitter who becomes a member of the Mets
Round 3: The Nationals will pick either a pitcher or hitter for the Mets.
Given the required usage of the players assigned to your division mates, a number of strategies can be employed. For example, you can draft a player you believe is overpriced for your opponent. You may focus on a poor defender at a key defensive position. You may select a high value player complicating your competitors roster forcing the owner to drop players they drafted. Remember, you’ll be facing these players during division play so you will have the opportunity to evaluate your draft decisions.
• Rule enforcement: There isn’t a way to force usage so we will use the honor system to ensure the usage requirement is met for each player assigned to your team. Please keep this in mind before joining the league.
• Also, owners cannot make any agreements with other owners regarding players drafted for assignment. So, I cannot agree with a fellow owner that I will select Pedro Martinez for their team while they choose Barry Bonds for my team.
