2000s--Hit vPitch v Choice- Playoff drama and a conclusion

PostMon Oct 10, 2022 11:19 am

Do you believe great hitting can overcome great pitching over a season and the playoffs? Or do you believe that great pitching will overcome great hitting? Perhaps you believe both approaches are misguided and a team with no restrictions other than traditional roster management is the solution.

This league will help answer this question. There will be three division themes within the league---the East will be hitting centric with limited funds to spend on pitching, the Central traditional teams with no restrictions on team make up while the West will be pitching centric with limited funds to spend on hitters.

The details

Season set: 2000’s

Drop penalties---Standard SOM rules

$80 million salary cap------

DH will be used

Hitting teams: Maximum value of pitchers is $2.5 million

Pitching teams: Maximum value of hitters is $3.5 million

Balanced teams---Use your funds as you see fit—no additional restrictions

Stadiums—Unique with restrictions

Hitting teams will play in stadium from predefined list of stadiums (listed below) which help hitters-

Owners choice will play in stadium from a predefined list of stadiums (listed below) which are neutral

Pitching teams will play in stadium from predefined list of stadiums (listed below) which help pitchers

When you sign up, indicate the type of team desired and the stadium you will be playing in---each stadium can only be selected by one owner. Here are the eligible stadiums

Hitting centric

Coors Field 75
The Ballpark at Arlington 56
Bank One Ballpark 52
Citizens Bank Ballpark 44
Fenway Park 41
US Cellular Field 41
Kaufmann Stadium 40

Owners choice---used by teams in Central

Camden Yards-37
SkyDome-36
Yankee Stadium-36
Turner Field
Comerica Park-34
Miller Park-33
Nationals Park-33
Shea Stadium-33

Pitching Centric:

Petco Park 7
Safeco Field 22
Pro Player Stadium 22
Metrodome 22
Jacob’s Field 24
Dodger Stadium 24
Busch Stadium 24

Draft---we will hold a two round snake draft via the message board. A randomizer will establish the draft order. After the two round draft, we will use the autodraft feature to finalize rosters.

When you sign up, indicate if you would prefer to lead a “hitters” or “pitcher” team or balanced team. Selection is on a first come/first served basis.

Previous results—in 2021, 4 similar theme leagues were played. The new league has some different rules (lower salary cap, addition of balanced teams) but here are the results of those leagues. Two hitting centric teams and two pitching centric teams have won the championship.

2000’s: Hitting centric teams won 54% of the games and a hitting team fought off 7 elimination games in the playoffs to win the title.

90’s: Hitting centric teams won the season series but a pitching centric team won the championship.

70s: The pitching centric teams won the season series and a pitching centric team claimed the championship

80s: The hitting centric teams won 60% of games versus pitching centric teams. Two hitting teams won more than 100 games but both were stunned in the first round of the playoffs. A hitting team which won the wild card won the championship
