Another HAL head scratcher

PostMon Oct 15, 2012 4:36 pm

SP Santana injured on first batter. HAL puts in closer Farnsworth. The HAL puts in emergency starter Pavano after he blows through my bullpen. WHY?

Is Farnsworth your most expensive RP?

From experience,

HAL will use your most expensive RP as the #1 RP.

HAL will also use that RP to start games when there isn't another SP ready to go.

Now in your case, I've never seen HAL bring in another SP so early in a game.

HAL at times will bring in another SP when ALL available RP's are used.

Bringing in the most expensive reliever is stupid in this situation. HAL should bring in someone designated for mopup or middle relief. The closer role should supercede stupid logic such as salary ranking and reserve that pitcher for closing situations. No manager would ever turn to their closer in such a situation and have him pitch multiple innings and thereby be unavailable for closing not only that game but likely subsequent games as well.

I agree, but if there is nobody indicated for those roles, HAL has to use some logic.

vsick makes a point. Could pikesvilleal tell us what roles he had set for what pitchers, especially Pavano?

Pavano not in the rotation and never used before.
Farnsworth is designated as the closer.
No other roles designated.

Santana gave up a hit to first batter of the game and injured. It just seems logical to put in a bench warming starter, if not then a long reliever. Ondrusek is my longest with R2.

Oddly, the relievers were used in this order, opposite of the logical order
Farnsworth -R1/C5
Lowe - R1/C0
Perez- R1
Ondrusek -R2
Pavano*-S7

I'm not sure if HAL would have used Pavano first if he had a relief rating, but him being without (S7) guaranteed he would be used in relief only as a last resort.

Agree, if you want that 5th starter to be an emergency long reliever you gotta make it an S/R guy and you gotta assign him the mopup role. Otherwise in the absence of roles assigned you are asking HAL to make guesses and daring him to do something stupid. Salary is about all you gave the computer to work with in making a decision.
