Idea for a new 70's Regional League

PostFri Nov 02, 2012 6:19 pm

I've had this idea for awhile. I am posting to see if there is any interest.
Regional League: Draft consists of players from their region only. After regular season begins- then pickups and trades are open as normal. The idea is to have some historical significance and to test managerial skills. I think the alignments below present some interesting rosters. Let me know if this is feasible or has it been tried before? I would be glad to create the League if there is interest.

Possible League Teams: Example: Los Angeles (Your Team Name)
Player Example: Reggie Jackson card includes both the A's and Yanks. Therefore, both the New York and Bay Area Leagues have equal chance at acquiring him during draft and post draft/pre-season period. Jim Rice could be drafted by the Great Northern League only etc.

70’s League Regional Alignments

1. Los Angeles: Dodgers, Angels
2. Texas League: Rangers (Senators), Astros,
3. Great Lakes East: Tigers, Indians
4. Missouri Valley: Royals, Cardinals
5. New York: Mets, Yankees
6. Great Lakes West: Twins, Brewers
7. Central: Reds, Braves
8. Pennsylvania: Pirates, Phillies
9. Great Northern: Red Sox, Expos, Blue Jays
10. Bay Cities: Giants, A’s
11. Seaport Cities: Orioles, Mariners, Padres
12. Chicago: Cubs, White Sox

Sounds interesting, how do the teams match-up to ensure each region listed is balanced?

I'm interested, but brent65 is right, do we know if the team pairings have enough players to make a team?

Thanks Brent65 and Jayhawk for the replies. A good point. I am filling out a possible roster for each team to post. I've looked at it before, it can be tweeked but I believe hitting balance is not much of a problem. Pitching balance will be more interesting. But after regular season begins, all rosters are open as per usual. Thanks again

BTW- The first managers to join will get first dibs on what region they choose :D

I like this idea! However since the switch to SOM from TSN we no longer can search the free agents by team so we would have to click on each card individually to find out what teams they are elligible for.

I do have an excel spreadsheet that lists all the players by what team each of their cards is for that I could share if we start this league.

I would like to sign up.

my only concern with a first-come/first serve sign up for the Regions is the last couple of spots may never fill up!

also is this a real draft or auto-draft?

finally do I understand correctly, once the draft is over I can pick up any Free Agent, even if he's outside my Region?

jayhawk, I think the only rule is that you can only put players that belong to your teams on your AD card. After that it is a normal league.

Thanks for the response. Some great points are made. I have drafted several of the regional teams as a simulation. All have great lineups. Here is what I propose....

I agree with jayhawk you can only put players that belong to your teams on your AD card. However, even after the autodraft is complete and until the first game of the season, there are enough players to fill a roster within the region. It would require that ALL managers adjust there rosters before the first game of the season. However, I realize there is no way to enforce this. Therefore, it would be more of an honor system as a gentlemen's game. After the season begins, it is a normal league with all trades and moves regardless of team card. Again, the objectives is to have a more historical reflection of the Greatest era of baseball; the 1970s. (Also, to test managerial skills)

I have taken the liberty to choose what I thought would be one of the weaker leagues (Chicago) only to discover it was indeed as strong as any I simulated. I will begin the league with this one. Please post any replies-- It may take some time to get this rolling.

80 M Cap with DH Auto Draft-- 5,10, 20 waiver rule as normal
League Name-- 70's Historic Regional League
Password: elvis

1. Auto Draft (AD) from the regions posted again below.
2. After the AD is complete, adjust roster to your region as some other regional teams may have been vying for the same player whose card also includes there region. -- honor system.
3. Game Play Begins-- As Normal-- Moves and Trades outside thine own region now begins.

1. Los Angeles: Dodgers, Angels
2. Texas League: Rangers (Senators), Astros,
3. Great Lakes East: Tigers, Indians
4. Missouri Valley: Royals, Cardinals
5. New York: Mets, Yankees
6. Great Lakes West: Twins, Brewers
7. Central: Reds, Braves
8. Pennsylvania: Pirates, Phillies
9. Great Northern: Red Sox, Expos, Blue Jays
10. Bay Cities: Giants, A’s
11. Seaport Cities: Orioles, Mariners, Padres
12. Chicago: Cubs, White Sox

Heekin65, I would suggest you let everyone first sign up on the message for there teams, and then go create the league. What if you don't get enough????

Just have everyone put their name by the team pairings.
