This team, the Phillies, won 16 in a row in one of 2cityfan's fine 24 team franchise theme leagues:
http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/335837The team was truly an enigma. After losing its first 2 games of the season, it won 16 in a row, then lost 9 of 10, won 6 more in a row, then started a long, steady decline. The team went from being a near world beater to doormat in a virtual blink of eye. After a 16-2 start, by game 55 they were under .500 at 27-28. They bottomed out at 31-37, but got back to 8 games above .500 at 75-67, before fizzling out at the end to finish 82-80. Truly a weird roller coaster of a ride season.
From game 35 through game 61, the Phillies were an unthinkable 5-22, a .185 winning percentage for a span equal to one sixth of the season. 11 of the losses were by 1 run. 3 were by 2 runs. It's tough to contend for a playoff spot with such a pronounced losing trend.
I commented at the time that even a retarded monkey could put together a team that could win more games than that!
4 of the 5 wins in that span were games started by Pete Alexander and the other win was in a game started by Steve Carlton. My nos. 3 & 4 starters, Frick & Frack, both $6 mi+ pitchers, had 14 starts between them during that stretch and my team went 0-14 during those starts. During that span the Phillies lost 9 straight series, including 3 sweeps.
I've had quite a few teams that have had double digit winning streaks. What I've noticed is that many times the streak ends by getting swept.
