New League/Tourney Idea - Sesquicentennial Tourney

PostMon Dec 10, 2012 6:56 pm

If you like drafting teams as much as I do here’s something in which you might be interested. The concept is a mini-tourney of five leagues that have staggered starts. The leagues are based upon five eras of major league baseball over the past 150 years.

Baseball’s Beginnings – Players carded from the 1870’s – 1920. (672 cards representing 505 players)

The Game Takes Off– Players carded from 1921-1940. (550 cards representing 404 players)

The War Years and Integration – Players carded from 1941-1955 and Negro League Players. (641 cards representing 516 players)

The Expansion Years – Players carded from 1956-1972. (885 cards representing 596 players)

The DH, Free Agents, and Big Money – Players carded from 1973-Present. (1,448 cards representing 954 players)

General Rules
• Each league will have a ten-round serpentine draft of one player per round, followed by a four-round serpentine draft of four players per round. The draft will be conducted here on the boards.
• A unique stadium can be taken at any point in the draft. Stadiums are limited to the era being played and once a city’s stadium is taken in the draft no one else can choose another stadium from that city. This adds a very interesting and challenging element to the draft process.
• Teams are $80M. All teams must carry 25 players at all times. DH used in the DH-era league only. 12-team leagues.
• The next era’s draft will begin two weeks into each season, with plans for each new league to start at the current league’s halfway point.
• A point system will be kept to determine the overall tourney winner.
o One point for each win.
o Ten points for making the first round of playoffs.
o Ten points for making the finals.
o Ten points for a championship.

• I will scrounge around for a unique baseball-related prize for the overall winner. Approximate value between $5.00 and $50.00, but likely much closer to the former, as I currently have three kids in college.

I’ve had the pleasure of hosting a lot of theme leagues over the years with my friends who play the 70’s game, and I value managers who enjoy the give-and-take that goes with a several month commitment. My only comment on the player pools would be to cut down the DH/FreeAgents/BigMoney player pool to one that's a similar size to the others, maybe end it pre-steroid era?
