Barnstormers 2013 Survey

PostThu Dec 13, 2012 2:28 pm

Hey Guys,

The Barnstormer Committee would like your input. We are thinking about adding more variety to the 2013 Barnstormer event, but we would like to know what you think. Instead of offering five 100M/80M and one 60/140 leagues as of last year, we are thinking about adding six different variety leagues, as listed below:

1. 100 AL only dh
2. 100 NL only no DH
3. 100 Pre-WWII no dh
4. 100 Post WW II dh
5. 60M no dh
6. 140M dh
7. Semi-final and Championship at 100M shuffle

This gives 7 different variations and a mix of players.

Another possibility is to add 1-6 shuffle leagues, all at 80M and 100M, and maybe one 60/140.

Cast your votes and let us know what you think. Your suggestions and input are very welcome!

I personally really like the idea of doing the shuffle leagues on several occasions. I think that those will show the most talented managers due to the need to adapt to the pool that is available.

Great idea to get input from the community about 2013 BSers.

I like the idea of greater variety, but have mixed feelings about lengthening the tournament.

I've always felt that those who play the most teams over the course of the year have a HUGE advantage in the tournament, as they see what works and what doesn't work, and learn which players perform well and which don't. Some managers just enter teams similar to ones that have been successful in non-BSer leagues. One thing that I noticed, though, is that those serial veteran players rarely play 24 team leagues, so I'd like to see a 24 team league included in the mix for the qualifying events, which might level the playing field a little more. I'd also like to see a 24 team league used for the Finals. Why not include as many managers as possible, as anyone who can qualify for a 24 team Finals is no managerial slacker?

I like the idea of playing pre or post WWII teams for the tournament for one qualifying event and missed that option in BSers 2012. I'm a babyboomer, so I especially like playing with the Post WWII set, as many of those players were my boyhood heroes. One thing I don't like, though, is inclusion of the negro league cards in the post WWII set, as those cards definitely are not from the post WWII era, as Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947 and the heyday of the negro leagues was prior to WWII. Most, if not all, of the stats used for creation of the negro league cards were from negro league games played in the 1920s and 1930s, so why should such cards be used in a Post WWII league? It would be nice if there was an option to include the negro league cards in any league. While fun to use, many of the negro league cards have numbers that are unrealistic for the post WWII era, especially the pre-steroid era, and such cards skew outcomes.

I also like the possibility of doing a shuffle league, as it makes it harder for serial players to enter cookie cutter teams used in other leagues. It might be a little tough to do a shuffle league at the $60 mil or $140 mil caps, but $80 mil and $100 mil caps should be no problem. As Roosky noted, a good manager should be a good manager regardless of the size of the player pool.

It would be nice to add a live draft to the qualifying leagues. Hopefully, SOM will have live drafts implemented long before BSers 2013 starts so that all the bugs can be worked out.

Two of those first four should be $80 million, any combination (AL/NL, Pre/Post WWII, DH/no DH) is fine, but 80M is the standard salary cap after all.

Yes, I agree. I meant to put $80M for 2 of the 4. We may not even do this. We just want to see what the community thinks about something this radical.

my suggestion:
1. 80 no dh
2. 100 dh
3. 100 Pre-WWII no dh
4. 80 Post WW II dh
5. 60M dh or 60 DH - shuffles (maybe)
6. 120 AL DH or 120 NL no dh
7. Semi-finals 100M no-shuffle (vote on DH)
8. Final - capped live draft

To clarify, we are NOT considering doing the exact format listed in Bruce's post.

Bruce has listed several formats, we are asking what you would like to see from some of his ideas listed. Barnstormers will try to stay much the same as it has for the past 10 years. We are looking at the shuffle the deck feature to see if this can integrate into the tournament, and if there is a single one type of game or "theme like" thing we can make as one of the events, this is your chance to have your say.

Natrually, we want to bring back live draft, but will wait to see what SOM will bring to the table on that.

Please just give us your ideas on one of two different formats from his list above you might like to see us add as an event !

I'd like to see a couple of events using the Shuffle the Deck feature-- as noted above, it will require managers to adapt on the fly rather than rely on their perennial favorites. I'd also like to see 1-2 rounds using one of the league/ era subsets, again to require us to dig deeper.

A 24-team league may be difficult, however. It may throw off the scoring, as there will necessarily be fewer playoff teams and champions (but it will be correspondingly more difficult to win). As far as the finals go, with 24 teams, it may take close to a week just to get out of the first round of the draft.

I like the idea of 24 team league for one of the 6 qualifying events
Shuffle the deck is trickier IMO...would ONLY want it used in one event if at all
I like a subset option (Al or NL, pre or post WW2) for one of the events as well

Would love to see some 70m, 90m, 110m, 120m etc., or some combination if only for variety's sake.
