Hitter Cards/Pitcher Cards

PostWed Dec 19, 2012 11:21 pm

I got the 1977 Strat set when I was a kid, but it was more of a novelty for me than anything else. I didn't play it much, and I don't have a clue where it is 35 years later.
Most of my Strat experience has been this online variety........

All that to say, it seems there was a discussion about how often a roll lands on pitchers card vs hitters card, and it seems like someone said it is 60% hitters card (which doesn't make much sense, seems like it would be 50%).

AM I REMEMBERING THIS DISCUSSION CORRECTLY?

I have no idea what discussion you refer to. But there are 6 columns corresponding to the roll of a single 6 sided die.
1-2-3 and the results come off the hitter card
4-5-6 and the results come off the pitcher card.

Now if we assume that die is properly balanced and all 6 numbers are equally as likely to get rolled that is a 50/50 split.

Now it is another discussion if the dice is weighted somehow. Those who gamble know there is such a thing as loaded dice. On the board game honest dice falls under the honor system.

It is also another discussion if you believe the computer's random number generator does not produce a truly random and equal distribution of rolls. I suppose one could write some kind of script to capture the dice rolls off the replays and plug them in to verify the distribution is truly 1 in 6 (or 16.666% for each number) for all numbers on each die.

Can you imagine the howling that would result if someone actually did that and reported say that a 2 is rolled consistently 20% of the time by the computer instead. It would probably have to be taken before the united nations.

Small sample size is to be noted.

I looked at one of my last $200M leagues. I played in the finals and lost. My team had 49% of the rolls on the pitchers card for the pitchers and 49%+ but less than 50% on the rolls on the hitters card when hitting. The winner of the league had the same.

The league as a whole had anywhere from 49% to 51% of the rolls on the pitchers card and hitters card. Only 2 teams had 50% of their rolls on the pitchers card when pitching and the hitters card when hitting. One team finished above .500 and the other did not. Neither made the playoffs. It is close and doesn't seem to keep a team from making the playoffs.

I did not pull up the games and look at the rolls to see how often certain numbers come up.

keep in mind that a percentage of the outcomes depend on the fielding. Forget the exact percentages, but something like 15% of rolls refer to the x charts. So breakdown is really more like: 50% hitters, 35% pitchers, 15% deference.

Not that it has anything to do with this topic, but 25-30 years ago, there was an organized 16-city nationwide priivate tournament for Strat players that ran annuallt during the summer. You signed up. paid your entry fee, drafted serpentine on Friday night (usually, more than one league), played a round-robin elimination all day Saturday, and the semis and finals on Sunday. Cash prizes. Ran for several years until the organizer (who had no connection to Strat) and also the tour's biggest winner was discovered to be using dice with the two side weighted. He drafted hitters with good two columns and usually came out a winner. Until that discovery, it made for a fun weekend.

Any other old-timer remember this?

I don't remember the cheating kind, but STAR tournaments still run similar (cash) tournaments. I think the web site is startournaments.com but Google may be your best ally here. I played in a few, but they were very tedious, took all Saturday morning for the draft and then you played about 7-9 games to determine the playoff team from your league.

The sportsmanship was occasionally abominable. One 6'-5" guy broke the table he was playing on after a loss - just smashed his hand down on it and it broke in half. It was one of those long narrow folding tables like you see in fire halls and church community rooms.

As far as hitter-pitcher-defense rolls, the exact numbers are:

Hitters - 108 rolls
Defense - 30 rolls
Pitcher - 78 rolls

Good stuff rburgh on the breakdown of whether the roll will be on hitter's card, pitcher's card or defensive X chart.

I always wanted to do a START Tournament, until I found on-line SOM which is much more convenient and fulfilling. Though I would maybe do a STAR tournament if they are still around some day. I would love to hear more about this guy who got caught cheating. How awful and embarrassing. I wonder how he was able to use those weighted dice. ...Speaking of dice rolling and dice games, I remember when I was a child one of my sister's boyfriends claimed he could "Slick roll" regular dice and effect the outcomes,..some of the time. Even as a kid I recognized this to be silly.

Ok, that's what I was talking about. I wonder how ONLINE Strat would work (with regards to the usual offensive domination) if the 15% that land on the fielding chart took AWAY from the Hitter's cards in stead of the PItcher's cards?

50% on PItcher's card, 35% on Hitter Card, 15% on Defensive Chart?

Hitters - 108 rolls
Defense - 30 rolls
Pitcher - 78 rolls

For purposes of the question initially asked in this thread those defense and pitcher rolls are both on the pitcher card.
So pitcher to hitter rolls are still 50/50.

Now if you adjust the question to address player dependent results then both hitters and defense rolls will relate back to the position players (either the card or their fielding ratings.) Though if you are going to approach from that point of view you have to remember that 2 of those 30 defensive rolls will be the pitcher's fielding. So add that back in to the 78 truly pitcher dependent results among the pitcher card rolls

80/216 = 37%

Some people take that ration and argue that you should therefore spend 37% of your cap money on pitching and the rest on position players. Not an unreasonable rule of thumb as long as you are flexible. Ballpark and specific strategy can tend to push that money ration in either direction.

One reason they put the X-rolls on the pitcher's cards is that great pitchers have lots and lots of outs on their cards, so there is room for X-rolls, but great hitters don't have a lot of outs and so this would limit their ability to make great hitters perform well. Nobody really cares if Emil Yde replicates his real-life numbers.
